FAS 2040 and IBM TS3100 LT05 directly attached????

Hi,

we are planning to buy an FAS2040c and would like to know if it is possible to directly attach an IBM TS3100 LTO5 tape drive to it via FC? In our current setup we have FAS3040c with a directly attached Overland library via FC. Backup is done with backup exec through ndmp. Also we would like to attach 2 IBM servers running ESX. Both servers should be attached directly via FC as well. From the products page I can see that the FAS2040 has 4 FC ports so there should be enough ports, I'm just not sure if this is possible to directly attach the devices. I only know configurations with a FC switch in between.

Regards,

Oliver

Nothing special to using direct attached, you should have no problems.

Connect to initiator port for tape drive, and target ports for the servers.

The on board FC ports can be configured as target or initiator.

system> fcadmin config

                  Local

Adapter Type      State                  Status

---------------------------------------------------

  0a   initiator  CONFIGURED             online

  0b   initiator  CONFIGURED             online

  0c   target     CONFIGURED             online

  0d   target     CONFIGURED             online

system> fcadmin config -d 0b

system> fcadmin config -t target 0b

system> reboot

I hope this response has been helpful to you.

Finally the day has come to get the tape drive up and running... and guess what it is not working.

TS3100 + ULT3580-HH5

I logged in to the TS3100 Webinterface to verify everything is fine. I realized that the webinterface was showing the tape drive as unsupported. I fixed this by installing the latest firmware for the library. The tape drive is now recognized.

On the 2040 I still get the message:

ukwgsan02> sysconfig -t

Tape drive (0a.4)  IBM     ULT3580-HH5      (Non-qualified tape drive)

I called netapp support and they told me to install the .tcf file for the ULT3580on the filer. This I did but unfortunately it is still shown as un-qualified.

The tape is now explicitly listed:

rsh san2 "storage show tape supported" | grep ULT
Seagate ULTRIUM06242
IBM ULT3580-TD1
IBM ULTRIUM-TD1
IBM ULT3580-TD2 - Dynamically Qualified
IBM ULTRIUM-TD2 - Dynamically Qualified
IBM LTO3 ULT3580 - Dynamically Qualified
IBM LTO3 ULTRIUM - Dynamically Qualified
IBM LTO 4 ULT3580 - Dynamically Qualified
IBM LTO 4 ULTRIUM - Dynamically Qualified
IBM LTO 5 ULT3580 - Dynamically Qualified

Before we purchased the drive our supplier contacted netapp to ensure the drive is supported and now this....

Any ideas?

Ok, I got it listed now.

I used the /etc/cloned_tapes file with the following entry:

IBM     ULT3580-HH5     EMULATES        IBM     ULT3580-TD5

This now lists the drive:

sysconfig -t

    Tape drive (0a.4)  IBM     ULT3580-HH5      emulates LTO 5 ULT3580
    rst0l  -  rewind device,        format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 4/800GB
    nrst0l -  no rewind device,     format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 4/800GB
    urst0l -  unload/reload device, format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 4/800GB
    rst0m  -  rewind device,        format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 8/1600GB cmp
nrst0m -  no rewind device,     format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 8/1600GB cmp
    urst0m -  unload/reload device, format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 8/1600GB cmp
    rst0h  -  rewind device,        format is: LTO-5 1600GB
    nrst0h -  no rewind device,     format is: LTO-5 1600GB
    urst0h -  unload/reload device, format is: LTO-5 1600GB
    rst0a  -  rewind device,        format is: LTO-5 3200GB cmp
nrst0a -  no rewind device,     format is: LTO-5 3200GB cmp
    urst0a -  unload/reload device, format is: LTO-5 3200GB cmp

I will now do a test backup

So, I'm running into the same thing. Where did you download the ULT3580 tcf file?

Glad I can help.

Hi Denis,

if you are running DataONtap 8.x you don't have this issue. Just to let you know.

If you are running an earlier version of DataONtap do the following:

add this entry in /etc/cloned_tapes file:

IBM     ULT3580-HH5     EMULATES        IBM     ULT3580-TD5

Wait a few moments and check the drive using sysconfig -t:

sysconfig -t

    Tape drive (0a.4)  IBM     ULT3580-HH5      emulates LTO 5 ULT3580
    rst0l  -  rewind device,        format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 4/800GB
    nrst0l -  no rewind device,     format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 4/800GB
    urst0l -  unload/reload device, format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 4/800GB
    rst0m  -  rewind device,        format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 8/1600GB cmp
nrst0m -  no rewind device,     format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 8/1600GB cmp
    urst0m -  unload/reload device, format is: LTO-3(ro)/4 8/1600GB cmp
    rst0h  -  rewind device,        format is: LTO-5 1600GB
    nrst0h -  no rewind device,     format is: LTO-5 1600GB
    urst0h -  unload/reload device, format is: LTO-5 1600GB
    rst0a  -  rewind device,        format is: LTO-5 3200GB cmp
nrst0a -  no rewind device,     format is: LTO-5 3200GB cmp
    urst0a -  unload/reload device, format is: LTO-5 3200GB cmp

Do a test backup. You might need to restart your ARC serve services.

Best Regards,

Oli

Hi,

we are using:

8.0.1P4 7-Mode:

and we didn't need the cloned entry. Just give it a try or update to a later patch level.

I try and paste the result here !
