it mostly works but out of the box it wont grab a DHCP address  instead go through node setup at the console to assign the mgmt ips then you should be able to go through discovery

You need to boot regardless just to do the option 4, or the 44/4a.  But once booted 8.3+ goes into node setup, where it prompts for the mgmt port, ip, subnet, and gateway.  Then you can discover that address in system setup and use that tool to configure the simulator.

Another option would be to re-enable dhcp, in which case a lif called "mgmt_auto" will be created on the mgmt port and assigned a DHCP address.  But you still have to install ONTAP first.

How do we re enable DHCP before setup is complete?

You'll see it in the loader if you printenv.  bootarg.init.dchp.disable=true.  set it to false.   bootarg.bsdportname sets the mgmt port.
