There is an OVA available for the ONTAP 9.7 simulator.  The system requirements are VMware workstation or VMware Fusion for the MAC.  Does the OVA work for you?

no ova does not work for me as Im trying an update on a running 96 simulator 

Iv tried the default tgz but get:
