Fabric Zoning question for ESX VMFS Luns

Netapp and Vmware recommended 'single intiator multiple strogare target ' zones.  Can some make it clear for me.

Today the way I do my Fabric zoning is I first create Alias for the ESX intiator as well as alias for each storage target. Then I create a zone with the all 3 of those alias inside. Is this correct or should I seperate each target to a seperate zone

So for example  (This today for 6 esx servers with a fas3020 cluster )

Aliases:

        filer1_fc0a:

              1,0      50:0a:09:80:86:d8:0a:fe

        filer2_fc0a:

              1,4      50:0a:09:80:86:d8:0a:fe

        esxvmvi01:

              1,8      20:01:00:1b:32:aa:17:f3

        esxvmvi02:

              1,9      20:01:00:1b:32:aa:d8:f0

        esxvmvi03:

              1,10      20:01:00:1b:32:ab:52:0e

        esxvmvi04:

              1,11      20:01:00:1b:32:ab:b8:15

        esxvmvi05:

              1,16      20:01:00:1b:32:aa:ea:f2

        esxvmvi06:

              1,17      20:01:00:1b:32:ab:4f:16

Zones:

        zone_esxvmvi01:

              filer1_fc0a      filer2_fc0a

              eesxvmvi01

        zone_esxvmvi02:

              filer1_fc0a      filer2_fc0a

              esxvmvi02

        zone_esxvmvi03:

              filer1_fc0a      filer12_fc0a

              esxvmvi03

        zone_esxvmvi04:

              esxvmvi04      filer1_fc0a

              filer2_fc0a

        zone_esxvmvi05:

              esxvmvi05      filer1_fc0a

              filer2_fc0a

        zone_esxvmvi06:

              esxvmvi06      filer1_fc0a

              filer2_fc0a

Hi and welcome to the Communities!

Netapp and Vmware recommended 'single intiator multiple strogare target ' zones.  Can some make it clear for me.

It meant to prohibit host to host visibility over FC fabric, whilst allowing each host (initiator) access to all necessary storage resources (targets).

Looking at your example I'd say you have just applied this rule.

Radek
