We have CDOT8.3P2, OCPM 2.0RC1, OCUM 6.3RC1 I used to able to create snmp trap by using DFM command to send alerts for LIF donw. To achieve the same, any similar commands / mechanisim to in this new environment: We have CDOT8.3P2, OCPM 2.0RC1, OCUM 6.3RC1? Is "dfm" command still working unider this combinaiton of tools? Thanks !

Thanks Bob for such indepth analysis. I have two follow-ups >>NetApp put a bunch of redirection features into cDoT that would avoid the backplane. "redirection" seems not going through backplane, differnet than I thought before. Can you please give me a few examples on cases that NetApp redirect traffics and meanwhile avoid the backplane. >>I recommend that you create a specific subnet (physically separate or VLAN) that is at least a /23 so you can have >>~512 IP's/datastores. You might not scale that high in practice. Assuming I have 4 nodes cluster, and 200 datastores. I should create a specific subnet, ex, 10.192.20.x, then each datastore will use one of IP's. What about on the cluster side? Should I create 4 LIF's, one for each node, or create 200 LIF's, 50 LIF's per node, to match each one of datastore? all 400 IP's are in the same subnet/VLAN. Thanks again, and looking forward your messages again.

I read the following commnet on traffic routing, but not able to understand. Can anybody please help me out, it sounds a very important concept. Prior to 8.3, SVMs routed at a node level, so traffic could only travel via the node that owned a data LIF. In cDOT 8.3, traffic will route from the data LIF even if it is a non-local path. If you can, please show me an example as for what can be achieve or what cannot be achive in cases of priro to 8.3 or 8.3 I thought data can be traveled across differnt nodes via local LIF, or LIF on another node, in any version of CDOT.

What if in NFSv3 situation? Since we don't have a plan to upgrade to v4 anytime soon. > your clients actually notice it for your specific workload Do you mean the slowness caused by indirect access is little, and not as critidal as optimizing other components? Thank you!

SVM1 has LIF1@node1 and LIF2@node2. If the client is coming to LIF1 and the volume is on NODE1 as well, then it will have direct access, however, if the client is coming to LIF2, to access the volume, then the traffic will be forward to NODE2. This is indrect access. indicrect access will be slower. I can think of using LIF1'IP not DNS name if I know the volume is located on node1, but, it sounds lack of flexibility, I would have to remmeber which volume is on what node, and then when the volume is moved, IP needs to be changed. My question is, what is a better way to aovid indirect access? Thank you for sharing! ontap 8.3

It seems the issue is that the target (user) coud not be recognized by the command, although I can see it from the output of "quota report". Any idear on why?

why the following command no longer work? Please advice It worked before. The only change I can think of is that we upgrade to 8.3p2. volume quota policy rule modify -vserver vsm-xyz -policy-name default -volume vol-xyz -type user -target 200618 -qtree "q-xyz" -user-mapping off -disk-limit 5GB

If SSD and SAS drives daisy chained together, and shared the same stack in a shelve connection, why is it not recommeneded? I heard it should be separated and using its own port, but what issue it could cause and why? Thanks for your sharing.

we just added two nodes into the cluster. Any rules should I consider to provisioning new aggregates? We have vmware/datasotre, NFS for Linux, and home. I know this is a very generic questions, are there any rules, or just follow the same way as we did to existing aggrs?

Can one copy of the mirror be the source of a flexclone? I am thinking to create a flexclone and then read data from both source and cloned volume. With the concern of it may slow down the source volume, since read from clone essentially is to read data from SRC, I am also thinking to create Load Sharing Mirror, and then read can be thefore from two different volumes, it will not interfere each other. Appreciate your advice!

Thank you both for your deep thoughts. A follow-up. In addtion to SV, do people usually also enable the local SnapShots? I know some people they would disable local SS's, and let SV to generate SS's, however, what if I wanted to do a quick restore, then restoring from local SS's will be quick. So, does that make sense, if I keep local SS's for 4 hourly per day, and 2 weekly retention, in addtion to whatever SV policy is?

I understand that SV is a backup tool to back up local volumes, through transferring local SS to a remote site. However, are these transferred SS identical to local SS's? In another words, can I copy these transferred SS's back to the local, and restore data from there? If yes, I can then reduce the local SS's, to save local disk space. Appreciate your adivce!

Hi aborzenkov , I guess, what you are referring to is that all iSCSI Luns should have the timeout set to 2 mins, and that is NA recommendation. If we don't have this parameter set, and then to change it, does that require to reboot the host? What is the command or the method to verify the parameter? Another question, assuming the pause would be longer than the timeout, since iSCSI LUN in this case is bootable drive, will we then have any issues if we don't boot during failover/failback?
Also, what about iSCSI? Same as CIFS, do we expect the interruption as well since both are stateful interruption? If iSCSI is interruptinve as well, then we may have issues since ESXi hosts are using iSCSI lun's for booting.
