Hi Chris, what do you mean by "the base snapshot ", is that the same as the entire base volume data? The way it works should be the same like between one filer to the other remote filer, correct?

Thanks Chris. Two follow-ups: 1. Is Altavault Dedup a global dedup? Which means regardless NFS or CIFS, regardless from which hosts, all incoming data will be deduped against the same dedup database? 2. Where is the dedup database located, in Memory or in local appliance cache?

Let's say I do full backup of a DB in daily basis. Will 2nd full backup data be processed against the deduplication Database which is created by first day full backup? If yes, the 2nd day data should be reduced a lot. Correct? My second question: I read ALT document, and in which it says that we should turn off the compression on the backup software. How do I know or to be sure of that ALTVALUT deduplication will work more efficently? Thanks!

We are thinking to use SMO, cloning a Oracle DB, then mount it on the other host. How do we do that? Thank you in advance for your inputs!
If I understand correct, SMO can be implmented on either Linux or Window platform. Orace is running on Linux here in our shop. So, which platform should we implement SMO on? and why? I think we should use Linux version, only because Oracle is running on Linux, but I cannot tell why in-depth. Wish somebody who has experience here can provide any reasons. Thanks!

If the same HBA ports are used for two different array's, then could it be causing conflicts by using two different Storage Host Utilities? Assuming that each Host Utilities maintain it's own settings, and also don't change any settings on HBA itself, there should be no any conflicts. Can anybody please verify the assumption here?

Very well said. As NetApp engineer not alwasy can accept Manager's perspective, when he see the pretty performance graphs based SVM, his immediate reaction would be to divide applications by SVM's, these graphs to me are very much not too useful. They and superficial, not mention what should be true reasons to use SVM's. As you said, we use SVMs in the situation of different authentication, different domain, or have different administration roles. None of these are cases here.

Within System Manager, or OnCommand Performance Manager, you can find SVM based performance widget, show us for instance latency and IOPS. Because of this, some people here believe we should create SVM's for each project or application, therefore we can quickly know how they are performed, then focus on the application not performing well. Some other people feel Since SVM's are all logical entities, performance widget in SVM basis provide us an idea on how an project is performed overall, but not so much insightful. When you need to troubleshoot the performance issue, we will still have to drill down to elements, ex, aggregates, volumes, and Nodes. How applications performed, not necessarily could determine the root cause. The criteria on whether or not create a SVM should not based on the widget. What is your opinion?

After installed REDHAT OS on a used to be ESX host, we still can see the old storage LUNs, in addtion to the new NetApp LUNs. It could be caused by the same WWPN number on the same HBA card, and the old zone on SAN switch is till active. Please confirm if it could be the cause, or any other courses you can think of? One way to resolve it is to remove WWPN from old zoning configuration on the switch. My question is, is there anything I can do on the host, to comopletely deconfigure these old LUNs? Thank you for sharing!

With NetApp volume/lun provisioning to Unix hosts, are there needs to mirror root and bootable lun on hosts side? Snapshot can make up data loss, and the storage can provide ways to protect data, but in terms of protecting bootable lun on the host, I think we still should create the mirror to root. What would you think?
