One more notice. While it is possible to add shelves with existing aggregate online, it is near to impossible to assign all disks at once, which will result in "broken" aggregate and rebuild as soon as enough disks from it are present. So if possible it is better to assign disks offline (from maintenance mode). There is possibility to offline aggregate on source filer to avoid described situation, but it is diag level command, so as usual - you should ask support before using it.

NetApp does not really have notion of thick vs. thin. There are multiple volume and LUN parameters that affect space allocation and reservation. Depending on your requirements, they may be set differently. I suggest to read TR-3965 for detail description of various options that control space allocation.

You can use “lun clone” to create virtual LUN copy based on specific snapshot. It behaves like a normal LUN which you then map to host and mount. Be sure to disable any scheduled snapshots while LUN clone exists to avoid busy snapshots that cannot be deleted. If you have flexclone license, you could clone the whole volume. It avoids “busy snapshot” issue. SnapDrive for Windows will use either method depending on Data ONTAP version and available licenses and is preferred way to mount snapshots if you use it. If you have snaprestore license, you can also revert volume to previous snapshot. This is the fastest method. Be aware that all changes since this snapshots are lost forever.

Procedure I suggested was a mix of head swap and boot device replacement, so “Update flash from backup config” was part of boot device replacement ☺ I agree, it would be easier (also if bad comes to worst and you need to call support) to follow documented guides and first do head swap with known versions and then upgrade. “Update flash from backup config” restores varfs from copy located in root volume (or, in the worst case, from network using tftp). varfs is used to keep some non-volatile configuration. From my experience it includes current time zone, diag user when unlocked, some EMS settings. May be more. I checked SSH host key which is saved by PuTTY and it is from /mroot and not from varfs so I probably had some other problem.

Well, the most obvious effect is change of SSH key (and possibly SSL certs as well) and loss of activated diag user. Customization of EMS is also kept in varfs, but it is probably not something done often. I wish we had KB that described what varfs is actually used for.

Does 62xx have flash card? I thought it have UFM module? And the problem is not really to reimage boot device, but to make sure configuration is preserved after that ☺ It is documented for simple boot device replacement, but not for additional head swap => sysid change.

With 8.x netboot is supported only for re-imaging of boot device, so you should not be able to go into maintenance mode after netboot, but you should be able to install new Data ONTAP version using “Install new software” boot menu option. Head swap with with 8.x is complicated by need to restore varfs before it is overwritten ☺ I have not seen step by step instructions; actually, after NOW redesign all instructions for head swap disappeared. So I believe that procedure should be - install software on boot device - go to maintenance mode (booting from boot device) and reassign disks - go to boot menu and select “Update flash from backup config” - finally confirm that serial number has really changed during next boot If you could describe procedure you followed for this head swap, it would be very helpful. - From: bjacobsen Sent: Friday, May 18, 2012 7:43 AM To: Borzenkov, Andrey Subject: - Possible to upgrade a diskless 6240 via netboot? <https://communities.netapp.com/index.jspa> Possible to upgrade a diskless 6240 via netboot? created by bjacobsen<https://communities.netapp.com/people/bjacobsen> in Data ONTAP - View the full discussion<https://communities.netapp.com/message/81844#81844> Hello, I'm doing a 6070 to 6240 head swap, with the 6070 at 8.0.1p5 and the 6240 currently at 8.0.2p4. Due to some critical issues with 8.0.2p4, I need to get both controllers up to 8.0.3 or 8.1. I know I can upgrade the 6070 to whatever version we decide on, then head swap as usual, netboot the 6240 to that same version, reassign disks and destroy mailboxes, then netboot again and upgrade. However, I'd feel a bit more comfortable with the process if I could upgrade the 6240 ahead before the head swap. Is that possible via netboot and the maintenance mode environment, or does the ONTAP upgrade require a root volume? Thanks. Yes, I am sure. FR is by definition space reserved for overwrites, which means - amount of space currently occupied. If you have fully thick provisioned configuration, LUN reservation takes care of allocated size and fractional reserve takes care of currently occupied size.
It does not make any difference whether you use incremental or absolute form. Fractional reserve applies to currently occupied LUN size, so reserved space will not increase initially after increasing LUN size (because no space is actually consumed). But of course if host later writes into this space, fractional reserve will increase.

To add to previous answer. 1. e0P is used for ACP (Alternate Control Path) as secondary monitoring and management channel for disk shelves. It is set up and configured automatically by Data ONTAP. If you do not have any external disk shelves you can simply disable it. 2. You are not required to have a separate root aggregate. There are plenty of discussions about this (last one I have seen just yesterday ☺ ). You can have single aggregate with root volume and data volumes in it. 3. I think, Software Setup Guide comes as the closest match to basic setup. Otherwise there are documentations used by NetApp Professional Service, but they probably are not freely available. And there are just far too many features to fit into any single paper in any case. 4. Personally I’d update to the latest 8.0.x version (8.0.2 or 8.0.3 if becomes available) unless you need features that only 8.1 supports. 5. “Wrench port” combines two devices (via internal hub) - Service Processor (remote console access, hardware status etc) and e0M port, which is simply 100Mb/s port that you can use as dedicated management port if your policy dictates it, so you do not waste 1Gb/s port for it.

Which backup type for virtual subclient is used? I believe, default is Disk level, which means the whole VMDK is backed up. If VMDK is preallocated, it will now save full preallocated amount of space.

Well ... technically that is what you do in MP-HA, so it obviously works. Whether this is really supported outside of MP-HA I do not know; I would just fix cabling to avoid any possible issues with support.

If filer 2 is taken over by filer 1 then root volume of filer 2 is intact. You have to start with diagnosing why takeover happened. If you are new to NetApp, the best is to open case with support (if ASUP is enabled case is normally opened automatically in case of unexpected takeover).
