I have an OnTap Select 9.11.1p2 clustered environment stood up in VMware 7.0.3. The backing storage is a FC Pure FlashArray which dedupe's and compresses data very well. I have looked through the documentation for OnTap Select and have not came away with a clear picture of the proper use for the dedupe settings at the volume level. I normally would not consider trying to dedupe at two levels, but I thought about it when reading through best practices. I also had a quick thought about our capacity pool licenses that are by the TB, and thought about any possible savings.
Has anyone gave this consideration, or know how to accurately explain the use of Storage efficiency with Select?
Thanks,
Dennis

I haven't deployed or dealt with ONTAP select so cannot share any direct experience (especially with external arrays). However, just reading through this docs.
https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-select/concept_stor_vsan_external.html#vnas-architecture
It says : "ONTAP storage efficiency policies are node scoped. Therefore, array side storage efficiencies are preferable because they can potentially be applied across data sets from both ONTAP Select nodes."
