NetApp Filer and MaxDirSize

Guys, there seems to be some confusion among our team regarding MaxDirSize. We use applications that write a large number of files to a directory. Does the Maxdirsize apply to each directory or to the entire volume? For example, if I have a maxdirsize of 164 MB, does that mean that only applies to that directory? In other words, I can have more directories in the same volume and they would still have to reach 164 MB depending on inodes? Our question is... if a CIFS folder in a volume is reaching maxdirsize, can I move the items to another folder in the same volume? Any clarification on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
