Hello All,
We have 3170 with Ontap 7.3.1.1 and planning to purchase FAS 6000 series with Ontap 8.1.
After installation & configuration, we are planning to migrate our data via Volume Snapmirror from 7.3 (32-bit) to 8.1 (64-bit).
I have gone through the latest SMG of 8.1 available on NOW which says
"You cannot use the vol copy command or volume SnapMirror between a 32-bit volume and a 64-bit volume." on page #149.
Also, i found a tr-3978 which has a table for 32-bit to 64-bit migration and it says that we CAN migrate from 32-bit to 64-bit (page 15). Is this TR referring to QSM or VSM?
I would like to know that in my scenario, can i do a VSM from Ontap 7.3.1.1 (32-bit) to a Ontap 8.1 (64-bit) as this will help me with retaining the snapshots history.
I know we can perform QSM or ndmpcopy in my scenario but these will not retain the snapshots history to the destination.
Please help.
Regards,
Ranil.

Yes, you can - e.g. have a look at this thread: https://communities.netapp.com/message/73882#73882

Thanks Radek.
Will surely wait to execute this with my own hands. However, i have not seen any document on this though.
Also, most of the community links related to this query are not answered fully.
What exactly NetApp has changed in 8.1 to accomplish this (Ontap 7.3.1.1 (32-bit) to a Ontap 8.1 (64-bit)) migration via VSM.

Ranil
