Is an IBM DS8950F acceptable storage behind a FAS8040?  We are a DR site and need to know if the DS8950F is compatible back end storage for customers as older DASD that we used is reaching EOL.

Quick answer is NO.

Longer answer is to look at the Interop Matrix:

FAS8040 + IBM -> DS8700/8800 series

Nothing for the 8950F.

That is not to say it will not work. It might, but it would not be supported. You would also need to acquire a FlexArray license which hasnt been sold for at lease a couple of years

Are you talking about FlexArray?

Not sure I understand what you mean by flex-array. This storage would be FC attached to the FAS8040.

The FAS8040 has storage, but this would be additional storage to meet customers needs.

A Solution could be that you have a ESX Host, where 8950F has been attached. Than you could buy a ONTAP Select and make Snapmirror Replikations. Other way is to buy the CVO at a Hyperscaler of your Choice to build a DR Solution in the Cloud.

FlexArray is third-party storage behind a NetApp FAS unit. There are a number of supported solutions. The one you have however is not on the supported list. It also requires a license to use and like I said, that license, as far as I know is no longer sold

Thank you, that was my reason for joining this site to get an interop matrix of what supported or not.

Also in hope that someone from NetApps would respond with accurate information.

I will try later to see if it gave me access to it or not.

I think I remember hearing that it's possible to upgrade the shelves to IOM6 but still keep the same drives, thereby making it supported. It may not cost too much for that.
