Is there a way to expose the number of times autosize has exectued for any given volume?
No such command or statistics, as far as I know.But wafl.vol.autoSize.done is logged when autosize is done, so you can check number of indication or histgram of this event from EMS-STATUS in AutoSupport.
The ONTAP maximum file limits is lesser than the maximum possible number of files supported by ONTAP for a volume. This video explains the reason why ONTAP has this lower limit on the file count.
