FAS3020 FC expansion change to target mode?

Hi,

We're trying to use one of the ports on the expansion card (qlogic 2312) in slot 1 to connect to an ESX host in another building, but haven't had much luck in getting the two of them to talk.

port 1a is connected to a tape drive (that we no longer need) and we're using ONTAP 7.3.2 which is supposed to support having the expansion port(s) configurable as a target or initiator, but appears to be stuck as an initiator.

The onboard ports are configued as:

Is this possible or am I doing something wrong?

On board FC ports can be reconfigured as target/initiator.

Expansion cards are factory configured to be target or initiator, and can not be reconfigured.

That's what I understood to be the case until 7.3.2...

https://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/san/fcp_iscsi_config/QuickRef/fc_iscsi_config_guide_73.pdf p.22 has a chart that shows that it is supported to have onboard and expansion ports mixed with target and initiator.  But if the controller comes from the factory set as one or the other...how do I tell the difference?  Is there different part numbers for the different type?

The "storage show adapter" command list every FC adapter in the System and the "fcp config" command will only list FCP target adapters

Also, "sysconfig -ca" will show the the netapp part number (parsed from /etc/sysconfigtab)

Hi,

Typically everything that start with a zero (0) is onboard, ie NICs, HBAs etc. Everything else is added on in one of the slots and will start

with a 1 and go up to how many slots you ve got.

Ie.

2ec   slot 2, port c.

4ea   slot 4 port a.

I ended up using https://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/hardware/NetApp/syscfg/ to figure out which cards are compatible with our system and the sysconfig command to find out what is currently in the system.  Looks like my predecessor had installed a SCSI controller to connect a tape library to for NDMP backups instead of using the onboard SCSI port, so we will need to switch that around and then put in X1028B-R6 cards into each filer for additional FC connectivity.

Try >fcadmin to change the the settings
