Process to Remove Drive Shelves and Add to Different Filer

Hi,

I have two trays of storage that are attached to a FAS3240 HA Pair. These two drive shelves comprise their own aggregate which previously held backup data. We have moved to a different model filer for this task and because of that, I need to remove the trays and add them to the new filer. I have deleted all volumes and the aggregate now shows 0% used space. Is it safe to delete the aggregate and then remove the drive shelves or is there some other process that needs to happen?

Thank you in advance.

Remove aggregate, zero spares, remove disk ownership. Then you get clean shelves that can be added to any other filer.

Did this work? I am trying to relocate 6 shelves from one filer to a few others and NetApp is telling me because the filers are on different OnTap levels that I have to downgrade the shelves to the OnTap level of the filer they are going in to in order for the filer to recognize and successfully add the shelves.  Please provide any additional details you can that might help me.  Were the two filers at the same OnTap version where you moved the shelves between?

Thanks,

Laurie

Are you trying to move data or spare disks?

Just spare disks. We have some filers that can’t accept the new kind of shelves, so we are trying to add capacity to them by pulling a shelf out of one filer and adding it to another.

Thanks,

Laurie

You should be able to move zeroed spares to lower version. Make sure all disks in shelves are spares and zeroed, remove ownership. That basically gives you virgin state, the same as you get from NrtApp.
