Manually initiate a single file restore from an SMVI backup.

Hi, I was just wondering what the process is to do a manual single file restore without using the Restore agent or the Single File restore wizard:

ie.

1. clone snapshot from flex clone.

2. export flex clone snapshot

3. Scan for storage in esx?

4. Assign disk to VM?

Also, would be good to know to be able to restore granularly on linux VMs as well.

Have a look at this alternative restore method for a complete VM.

You’ll have to tweak the procedure in the section 1.2. Instead of removing the disk, you can simply add another disk to the VM where you want to restore the file. Once you do that, you have an additional drive (D: or E: depending on your config) available from where you can copy the neccessary files.

In case of Linux you may have to run fdisk –l , rescan the scsi bus using sysfs and mount the partition. After the copy you can unmount the partition.

Not quite what I was after. We are also using SMVI 2.1.

We have a cpl issues with SFR on SMVI where we can't mount or clone from the gui.

So what I was trying ascertain was how could we do that process manually through the  command line on netapp and on Vcenter.

So we would clone the particular snapshot, as it is NFS, add the clone to the exports list, then in VCenter what would we need to do to mount an individual disk to get a single file?

Not sure if I am being clear, apologies in advance!

Ok guys I worked this out.

You still perform the same process for a single file restore you would do for a windows machine.

Once this is done, the clone has been created and attached to the VM you can just follow the below guide to mount the disks (NB. be careful mounting the servers cloned root disks on the same server). We have built a restore VM wwhere we do our single file VMs.
