Setup Flash Pool before or after CIFS and LUNS and SSD assignment?

Hi All,

We have a FAS-2240-2 in HA Mode with both CIFS and FC LUNs up and running, with SAS and SSD Disks.  As of today the only production thing on it is my virtual desktop, which can be moved rapidly if I  need to make changes.  The end goal will be to have our Vmware View Dedicated and Linked Clone Desktops using FC LUNs to two ESXi 5.1.0 Clusters and User Roaming Profile, Redirected Folders, Home Directories, Data Share all being CIFS Shares.  I have been reading over several good docs and threads on Flash Pool Configuration https://forums.netapp.com/thread/37372, TR-4070, as well and other stuff I found on the web.  One question that I have not been able to answer is this, do I need to configure the flash pool prior to configuring the CIFS and LUNs?

Also to properly configure RAID DP I need more than three disks.  When I do a show disks

the SSD are assigned to different controllers.  My initial thought is to assign them to a single controller and then build the new aggr following the link above.  Does that sound correct?  Also f I assign them to a single controller which aggr will be able to take advantage of the Flash Pool capability?  I am so confused, can anyone help?

TIA.

You can add SSD to aggregate to convert it to flash pool at any time later. Aggregate which gets SSD added will also benefit from them. Adding just three disks means two thirds will be lost. So you probably want to add some more.

Thanks for the information.  I wasn't really looking forward to to have to tear down what I had built up already.  Any input on the disk assignment issues?  As far as I can tell I need to move them over to one controller to get the full benefit.

TIA,

Jim

You will want your disks assigned to the controller that has the aggregate you want to add flash pool to.   keep in mind only one aggregate per controller can take advantage of flash pools at this time.

I wanted to thank everyone for their help.  Here is what we did.  Went into loader mode and took both PCM's back to factory defaults, reason being is both controllers had aggr0 built using all disks and you cannot apply a flash pool to aggr0 because you cannot set it to hybrid mode.  So on PCM 2, filer2, it has aggr0 with 4 disks, 3 used and one spare.  PCM 1, filer1, has aggr0 with three disks, I then took all remaining disks on PCM2 and moved all other SAS including the SSD disk over to PCM1.  I then created fp_aggr with 17 SAS disks and set it to hybrid_enabeled on.  I was then able to add the 5 SSD, leaving on spare< and create the flash pool.

In our current configuration we have 5.02TB of usable space.  I have created three CIFS shares currently show about a 30% space savings using de-dupe and 5 FC LUNs showing and average of 50% space saving using de-dupe.  Our plan is to move our VMware View Linked Clones and Dedicated system and all User Home and Profile directories to the NetApp for better performance than our Compellent.

Thanks again,

Jim
