multiple snapshots on a volume with multiple luns using VSC 2.0

          Hello,

We have a scheduled job in which we have selected 5 VMFS datastores to run every night. These LUNs are in a single volume. When we look at the snaps in that volume, we see that 5 different SnapShots have been taken and each one has a suffix _LUNX, one, for each lun ..._LUN1, ..._LUN2, ..._LUN3, ..._LUN4 and ..._LUN5.

There are different VMs on each LUN/datastore so we are wondering if VMs SnapShots on LUN1 are only consistent in that particular SnapShot, and so on.

If would like to backup these snaps to tape, do we to backup the last one o each and every one of the 5 snaps that I see within the volume?

What do you think?

Thank you and regards,

Hi,

yes it's normal. We have some VM's here which spans multiple datastore and when we select the job for that VM then it takes snapshot of both the data stores. So it basically depends on how ur Vm is provisioned .

For example.

when u select a datastore for backup which has 5 Vms and each 5 vms span multiple datastores . Then there will be 1 Snapshot created for this Datastore or LUN and 4 more on the other datastore where the VM is part of.

Hi Mig,

Since you take snapshots for each lun you should be seeing  5 different snapshots and each snapshot will refer to every Datastore that is pointed at the time of backup.

i.e each VM in that particular DS will be consistent in that snapshot.so you will have to take all the snapshots to tape.

Please let me know if understood the issue correctly.

Hi,

So it is normal that in a single backup job which includes several luns, an independent SnapShot is taken for each datastore within the backup?

Thank you!
