Great - Last question, although an administrative headache, do you think it is feasible to not use NIS in the new environment and instead map each user within local files?

Thanks for the input scott. Do you know if NIS is something you join like AD or is it something you point at? Also, if you just point at NIS does this mean that unix applied perms would still work as expected if you did not use NIS in the cloned environment and instead mapped the relevant windows user > unix user within the local files (on the filers)? As you can tell I know nothing about NIS etc!

I want to clone an NFS / CIFS environment. Some of the unix qtrees are accessed by windows AD users, I believe the filer is using NIS to map / authenticate the windows accounts into unix accounts. The NIS environment will also be cloned as will the AD environment. I will be using snapmirror to clone the data volumes onto the new filer, however I am unsure if it is possible to configure the new filer to point at the cloned NIS environment so to allow mapping / authentication to continue as it did in the old environment – If this is possible how is this done? Also, if using VSM / QSM from the old filer to new will all file system security / permissions also migrate? Or do I need to make sure that the filer is in the correct AD domain / NIS before I replicate the volumes / qtrees Lastly, what config files do I need to verify on the exiting filer check if NIS is being used? – Also, anything else I should be aware of?

npiv? this is an iSCSI environment not FC, is this still valid? Also, I do not have more that 15 luns, howerver I still want to split the luns over seprate SCSI controllers

Has anyone deployed fcoe/nas/network from an ESX server viaa converged adapter – The ESX server will access storage via fcoe and nas(block is for RDM access for some VMs). Looking for some advice around this...

I can attach the disks to the additonal controllers so no they don't show in device manager - These are not physical adpaters, just additonal virtual adpaters

I took option 2 although I know it is not the best - I also have a single volume/lun for alll storage group logs and a single volume/lun for all databases - However, when running the configuration wizard I cannot place more than one database on the database lun? Any ideas?

A little confused here, RDM vmdk disks? An RDM is notformatted with vmfs, only ntfs as the lun is presented directly to the windowsVM? Also, we are not using the micorsoft iscsi initiator, theRDM luns are presented to the VM from the ESX severs via the ESX softwareinitiator.

Disks are RDM luns via the ESX software iscsi initiator, ie,the luns are mapped to the esx hosts then attached to the VM running on thesehosts as an RDM – All directed by snapdrive.

We are looking to use SME to facilitate transactional consistent replicas of Exchange 2007 VM in conjunction with snapmirror, I have a few questions around this: 1, Storage was never sized to hold backups (snapshots) for any lengthy period of time, however it would be nice to hold a few days worth and gain the benefits of using SME as a backup product – Is it possible to have SME keeping a few days worth of backups then utilise the 3 rd party product for longer term backups? 2, If we want to use SME purely to create consistent replicas can we use one volume and lun for all databases (5) and another volume and lun for all SG transaction logs? – In this scenario we will not be interested in splitting things up for granular restore capability as this will be achieved with the 3 rd party product.

I have added 2 additional LSI Logic SAS controllers (ESX 4.1) to a win 2k8 r2 VM – I want to attach database luns to one controller and log luns to another with snapdrive 6.3 with ESX sw iscsi RDM luns. I cannot work out how to attach to luns to the added controllers??

I had used netbios name on filers but fqdn on SMVI (VSC) config – Changed both to the same (netbios) and all is well! I notice that on the destination there are multiple snapshots – One with the smvi prefix and the other a normal snapmirror update. Is this because the backup is created first then a snapmirror update is performed (so we have two snaps on the src / dest with the same timestamp). Lastly, do you know if it is possible to use flexclone to clone any snapshot (not the most recent) on the dest volume – For example, data is corrupt in the most recent replica so rather than break the relationship and end up with corrupt data, use flexclone to clone a previous snapshot to access “good” non corrupt data.

Ok, that is the syntax I have but the snapmirror update isnot being performed (the backup is however). I create the baseline with no issues, I can even run asnapmirror update on the dest without issues – Again, no error is logged in theVSC, snapmirror log or the system console ??

If I wanted to use SMVI to initiate my snapmirror updates does this mean the destination does not need an entry in the snapmirror.conf file? Also, can SMVI be used to create a pure snapmirror schedule – Ie, not also create local backups / snapshots?

If a snapmirror relationship is broken, data written to the destination that will need to replicated back to the original source do I just need to use “snapmirror resync –S original_dest:vol original_src:vol”?? Also, if I then want to re establish the origal src to dest relationship I do the same again in the reverse order? Just want to be 100% sure I will not lose data!!

Sorry, my mistake! Although I did check the hosts via cifs/wordpad, when I checked with rdfile the name was appended with the local filer name!

Yes I have set all options from within the vfiler and I can also ping to and from the vfiler (I can snapmirror from the vfiler if I use the destination IP address).

There are 2 vlans configured on a single VIF, one vlan is a pure layer2 iSCSI vlan for host to storage access, there is no gateway configured on this vlan as we do not want (for security) to be able to route in / out of this vlan. The 2 nd vlan if for management access / snapmirror replication and it is this vlan which has the default route listed in /etc/rc. The networks are: 10.220.211.0/24 = iSCSI network 10.220.194.0/29 = mgmt network, with a default route 10.220.194.150 The traceroute below is from a source address on the iSCSI network (10.220.211.0) to a remote network, note the path taken is via the default route for the mgmt network (10.220.194.0). Ok, I have tried changing “options snapmirror.checkip.enable” without success. I have also double checked the /etc/hosts file entry. The source filer is a vfiler and I have configured snapmirror from within the vfiler (not the host system, vfiler0), I am wondering if it is an issue with vfilers, Scott??? Do you think vfiler0 needs the same /etc/hosts entry as vfilerxx?

Both src and dest can resolve each other via hosts file – If I use the hostname in the snapmirror.access option I receive access denied, however of I use the IP address then the dest filer can access the src. I would like to use names rather than IPs. Am I missing something here? Is this something to do with reverse lookup etc??
