I have found that I can route into an iSCSI subnet eventhough the /etc/rc file does not have a default gateway for that particular subnet– The subnet (vlan) does however have an interface on a L3 device to allow routing, I am confused as the filer has not been configured with this address, however,it can route off the subnet. Can anyone explain this? Does this have something to do with the routed command and entry in the rc file? – RIP is not present on this network so router discovery can’t be the culprit???

I am looking to use SME / SDW with Snapmirror and SRM. I have 4 storage groups each with 1 mailbox database and a 5 th storage group with a public folder database. I was thinking of having 5 volumes with 5 luns (one lun per volume), each lun would host the storage group and it’s containing database. Does this sound like a valid config to use with SME? – If not what should my layout be? – Any other info which would help me avoid potential issues with this setup (exch2007, SME, SDW, Snapmirror and VMware SRM)? I am new to SME, however I have a good understanding of all other components.

Preferred ip address configured, bidirectional resolution works fine andcorrect interface. This is VMware, not Microsoft so no need to HUK etc. Will look to open a case when I get some time, for now we are using Win2K8which does not experience this issue. I will post back, thanks for the assistance.

I have since created my VM as a Windows 2008 R2 guest (3rdparty vendor give me the ok) as this OS / SDW combination worked flawlessly. However, to answer your question, I can create a LUN withSDW, if I disconnect from the LUN and try to reconnect I receive the sameerror.

Clarification needed. If using SDW 6.2 within a win2k8 vmware guest with esxsoftware iscsi luns attached do the host utility kit and DSM need to beinstalled within the guest? MPIO etc is being handled at the host layer and the guest isnot aware of multiple paths etc so Iwould think these components do not need to be installed??????

Great, the document does mention using iSCSI RDMs via ESX if you want to useSRM. I am fairly sure it will be for the reasons mentioned above (it makes senseas you do not need to change ip addresses with the guest OS to connect to yourluns).

Is it possible to failover an exchange vm (luns automaticallyattached etc) which is using snapdrive and sme with vmware SRM if the guest isaccessing the luns via iscsi with the iscsi initiator within the guest? Within tr-3822 this solution is discussed, however, the lunsare attached via RDMs presented from ESX and accessed via the ESX software iscsiinitiator as opposed to the guest accessing the lun direct. I have a feeling this may be more difficult as in guestiscsi NICs will need an IP address change to reflect the storage network at theDR site?? Anyone done this or have any ideas?

Certainly looks more promising as I can choose the storage controllerthen the vfiler within the provision data store wizard. However! I do receive theexact same error as before “No iscsi interfaces etc??”

I have created a vol and assigned to the vfiler, added the vol as a resource, howerver I still can't create a datastore on the vfiler from within vsc. The error reads: No datastore types are available. Please check storage controller licenses and support ESX host protocols. Any idea?

So within the vsc you need to add the controllers for the host system? Is this not a security breach going against the whole idea of vfilers??

Ok, thanks. I did try the "vol create" command within the vvfiler context, howerver, the create command was not listed?? This is why I thought vsc would not be able to provision datastores. This is an iscsi environment.

Scott Should I be able to create SAN datastores with VSC 2.1 connected to a vfiler? Surely not as the volume has to be created within vfiler0 and then assigned to vfilerX? Anyway, I gave it a go but receive the error "No datastore types are available". Regards

I am new to vmware over NFS – Pls could someone give me an example of what an entry in the export file should look like for an ESX cluster connecting to an NFS volume? I have tried a few different options without success, ie: /vol/vol1 –sec=sys,rw=ip_address_of_vmk,root= ip_address_of_vmk,anon=0

I wanted the 2nd subnet to be able to route out of the vlan, however thinking about it again I don't need this as I can snapmirror / mgmt access into the vfiler on the 1st vlan. thanks for the quick response

I am hearing / seeing conflicting information. In ESX environments the configuration we have followed is seen at section 3.8 of the “NetApp and VMware vSphere Storage v2.1” which explains multisession and multipath with two vmk ports both of which are in the same ip subnet (169.254.177.0/24). Is this not the same principal for a windows host? Or am I missing something here?

Thanks. Pls could you explain why 2 separate ip networks are required? Is it not feasible to have two separate NICs each will an ip on the same network and multipath? Also, I checked the MS iSCSI guide for info on how to enable multi session, however there is no info here. Can you give me the high level steps required to set this up? Lastly, do I need multi session to allow me to take advantage to more physical links (I do this in ESX environments but not sure for Windows)?
