The NOW site still just lists 5.0 available for download and the list of known issues is very long. Some of them prevent us from upgrading - for example, execute reports from CLI. I am just so scared to upgrade DFM (4.0.2) in our environment in case something major no longer works correctly. When is the next scheduled release and what is likely to be fixed and still broken? Cheers, Richard

https://now.netapp.com/NOW/download/software/ontap/8.0.2/dfm_plugin.shtml My guess is that DFM 5.0 was released before ONTAP 8.0.2 It is standard practice to have to download and install plugins for newer ONTAP versions.

Thanks for your insights. I'm looking into the available options. I have a ton more storage available on my snapvault secondary than I have on my primaries, with the intention of holding more backups on cheaper disks and on a cheaper controller and with next business day support instead of 4 hour. Running backup snapshots on a primary filer only seems to defeat the purpose. Shouldn't SME be capable of backing up the database you specify, whether it's active OR passive on a particular server?

Well, I had pretty much come to the conclusion that it wasn't possible but wanted someone to verify that anyway. Is the most sensible solution here just to run all of the backups on the primary filers and not bother with archiving/snapvault at all? Or perhaps have a 3rd server in the DAG that just does backups? I just don't know what to do for the best here...

Sorry, I've just stumbled upon this thread having just asked the similar question regarding the vault/archive backup. The fact that a re-baseline is required if the database changes node is crazy! That means an additional copy of the database is needed on the snapvault secondary and that wastes a lot of space. Does it make sense to run and keep all of the backups on the primary volumes and just not bother with archiving at all?

I would like the ask the community for a little help in validating the SME layout that we have here and see if it makes sense. Please bear with me because this is a little difficult to explain. We have a number of Exchange 2010 databases but for the sake of this exercise I will simplify it. Suppose we have 2 Exchange 2010 database servers (A and B) in a DAG and a single database. Each server has access to data and logs LUNs in separate volumes and on separate filers. SME is configured to only backup the database on one of the servers (A). Now, we want to archive the data to a third filer. SME is set up with access to a dataset on server A and when a backup runs on A it successfully archives the data according to the schedule. That all works well - the problem results when the active copy of the database is moved to from server A to B. Not only is B not configured to take a backup, it is not configured to perform an archive copy either because there is no Snapvault relationship. In summary: Server A --- volumes DATA-A and LOGS-A on FILER-1 (the primary copy, usually active) Server B --- volumes DATA-B and LOGS-B on FILER-2 (the secondary copy, usually passive) Snapvault relationship between DATA-A/LOGS-A and ARCHIVE-A on FILER-3 My Question: What is the typical scenario for maintaining a primary backup and an archive (Snapvault) relationship when the database is in a DAG and at any point in time either server could have the active copy of the database?

Hi folks, Been looking at the SC (3.4.0) framework for a week or so. I am wondering if it is considered to be a useful platform for delegating control of filer operations (snapshots, clones, snapmirror and snapvault updates). Right now I have a handful of users that have to run such operations and as such they have accounts on various filers with the minimum privileges needed to perform such operations. However, the filer RBAC controls are far too wide and I can't limit these operations to particular volumes, for example. I like the idea of using our DFM server to set up a proxy by which all commands go through but I have to provide a simple interface so that snapshots and clones (et cetera) may be run from shell scripts. From my research it would appear that a SC server would be required for each platform that needs to initiate such operations. Am I correct in this? It also appears that you cannot configure DFM proxy via the GUI because it insists on a filer's credentials being entered. I have not tried CLI configuration as yet. Has anyone else used this mechanism to delegate control in this manner or am I really trying to use the wrong tool here? Any insight or advice would be appreciated. Richard

I am not sure in that case. We use NetBackup here and it works fine with NDMP backups and restores. Does the filer log anything? If not, you could always try to enable NDMP debugging ("ndmpd debug 70") and take a look in the /etc/log/ndmpdlog files in vol0 after you try to run the restore again.

Are you restoring the files back to the original volume? If not, it's likely you're not giving a valid path for the restore and your files are ending up in the root volume (usually named "vol0"). Check that your restore path begins with "/vol/volname" where volname is the name of an existing volume. If you have CIFS access to your root volume you can usually access its contents via \\filername\c$ HTH, Richard

Until SMVI has integration with Protection Manager for archived backups, manually copying the files is your only option. You can use Protection Manager to do this - it issues an ndmpcopy from the snapvault secondary back to the primary. Richard

Well, I think I can answer my own question: 1. create a new volume in the other aggregate at least as big as the old volume (vol create new_vol new_aggr <size>) 2. restrict the new volume (vol restrict new_vol) 3. make a copy of the old volume to the new (vol copy start -S old_vol new_vol) (takes a while, the -S switch specifies that snapshots are to be copied also) 4. vol online new_vol 5. vol offline old_vol 6. snapvault start -S <existing_pri> <new_sec> (does NOT re-do a baseline) 7. snapvault update <new_sec> (may need to run this twice) 8. on the primary: snapvault release <pri> <old_sec> 9. when everything is confirmed as working, vol destroy old_vol I tried this with a small volume (~ 1.5GB) and now I'm doing the same with a 350GB volume. Let me know if you have questions! Richard

This was a while back, so I may be mistaken here. I think there were two factors involved: one was to make sure that the DNS name of the filer was identical to the Kerberos principal name. We had to check the filer's entry in Active Directory for that. If it doesn't match then you have to change the DNS domain of the filer, remove the AD entry and reconfigure cifs by doing "cifs setup". The second issue was that there is a version of OSX (although I can't remember which one) that did not successfully connect if share browsing was disabled. As long as it could successfully browse one share, it was ok. So, what we ended up doing was enabling share browsing at a filer level and then disabling share browsing on each of the shares. Let me know if these are applicable to you and how it works out. Cheers, Richard

I totally agree with this sentiment. Right now I am holding off switching from VIBE to SMVI because scripting is still required for Snapvault integration. I will be escalating this to our SE before long. Richard

It's been a while and I haven't used snap autodelete since this. I wasn't pleased that 5 months of snapvault backups got removed. I could have tested how and why it was doing what it was doing but I never got around to it. At the time I was stuck not being able to grow the volume above 4TB because there 4TB was the volume size limit when using ASIS on a 3140. We now run snapvault on a 3160 with ONTAP 8.0.2. I'm not sure what "space reservation" means in this context. The volume was not thin-provisioned so maybe that's what it means. Typically I associate space reservation in a volume with a non-thin provisioned LUN. At least that's how Operations Manager displays volume statistics. The manual and the "man" page could be a lot clearer if this is the case. I would be interested to hear your findings. Thanks, Richard

Do these "files" appear as folders through the command-line (cmd) ? I have seen something similar before when there is a special hidden file in the parent folder that changes the type of the file/folder. If they still appear as files on the command-line, then something probably went wrong with your copy operation. Ensure that your new qtrees are have the NTFS security style.

I can't tell you how many times this has happened within our team! It would be nice if the restore operation would fail if the target volume didn't exist rather than restore into vol0. As said, mount up vol0 on an admin host and delete. Richard

I've had ASIS get stuck like this once before, on ONTAP 7.3.5 I think. Things to try... if you issue "sis stop /vol/VMFS_IBM6040N1D" what happens? Does it go back to an "idle" state or is it still stuck in "active"? Also, issue "sis status -l /vol/VMFS_IBM6040N1D" and look for any errors there. If everything else is ok (volume size and capacity as previously mentioned) then the only way around this is to reboot the controller. Richard

I could be wrong and I haven't done this very often, but I think all you need to do is to use the "CREATOR OWNER" principal and don't assign "change permissions" rights. I know this is supported by NetApp's CIFS implementation. You should test this to make sure it's doing what you want. HTH, Richard Message was edited by: Richard Harwood
