No (at least, it is not supported). Supported upgrade/downgrade paths are single major version non-disruptive or two major versions disruptive. This would be 7.2 -> 7.1 -> 7.0 -> 6.4 etc. Is it hardware replacement of failed switch?

It is described in details in documentation, SAN Administration Guide, LUN Clones. In summary, you create snapshot and then you create LUN clone for existing LUN which is "backed" by this snapshot. snap create vol1 mysnap lun clone create /vol/vol1/lun0_clone -b /vol/vol1/lun0 mysnap Now you can map /vol/vol1/lun0_clone to host (it need not be the same host that is using /vol/vol1/lun0 itself), mount it on this host and copy data. You may need to quisce application or otherwise ensure data in snapshot is at least crash-consistent. In the worst case you may need to stop application, unmount LUN, create snapshot and then mount LUN and start application. This gives minimal possible downtime but gurantees absolute consistency of data in clone.

The obvious problem of copy based transition - it needs the same amount of space on target as on source. Looking at specs above, target lacks quite a bit to copy data over. This will need swing gear, so it is more management/sales issue. Once enough space is available, technical part is easy (for a given definition of easy). BTW I deliberately used "technically possible" not "supported" 🙂

My concern is that if I run <software update 30803002.tgz> a) Where have you got "update" and "tgz" from? File is zip and you install it using "software install", not "update". b) "software install" just unpacks zip into root volume; download -d just copies it from root volume onto boot device. The actual update happens on reboot. Newer versions of loader do BIOS update automatically if they see newer versions available on boot device. BMC update must always be initiated manually from loader anyway. So what you can do is to halt in loader, do update_flash manually, reset, halt in loader, do update_bmc. It makes sense to boot through after BIOS update to make sure nothing else is triggered automatically.

If you continue with 8.2.4 download, at some step you will see suggestion to use 8.2.4P1. You can also search for "recommended ONTAP release", the first hit is KB that lists currently recommended versions.

BMC update reboots BMC which obviously disconnects any existing remote session to BMC. Firmware/BIOS updates do not affect BMC connectivity.

Yes, it's possible to do snap mirror to tape and then restore on different filer. Good thing is, it avoids need of full initialization, you just resync to new destination. This assumes you are using VSM. QSM is different.

If LAN access to SP does not work, the only alternative is serial console. Yes, digi offers serial port concentrators and we used them in projects. They are nice ... Unfortunately it is hard to justify cost of something, that will probably never be used in real life 🙂

Reallocation helps in two case - it optimized data layout (reduces fragmentation) and optimize sequential workload. The former is inherent problem of any redirect-on-write filesystem. The latter depends on your use case, although in most cases you always have some sequential workload (even if you use snapshots for backup, you probably want to verify them and that does sequential scan). De duplication unfortunately convicts with reallocation. Reallocation aligns blocks belonging to the same file, but decuplicYrd blocks may belong to multiple files, so which one should win? You still may want to use free space reallocation to optimize raid layout though.

Good. Then follow https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=1015457&actp=SUBSCRIPTION to convert each node to C-Mode. You can actually use NetBoot (in that case it is pretty much irrelevant what version is currently installed), just make sure to update SP firmware and BIOS in advance to the latest release. Supported LAN ports usage is listed in HWU. Otherwise just follow Express Setup Guides for C-Mode. You probably won't find them for 62xx models, just adjust internal port indications according to HWU recommendations.

We have currently unutilized 6480 Such model does not exist (at least, not publicly 🙂 ) So here is what I need: For a start, you need C-Mode license. Do you have one?

I am not aware of any issues caused by different drive firmware, but it may be good occasion to update it on all drives. Having the same version is always preferrable.

This can be a result of incomplete configuration. When configuring an interface or interface group with the ifconfig command, nfo needs to be included to have Network FailOver (NFO) enabled for the specific interface. Sorry, but that is wrong. "partner XXX not in use" simply means that there was no failover, so partner interface is inactive on this filer. NFO is something rather different and enables failover in case on network connectivity loss. It is unrelated to this question.

And of course it depends on correct HA pair and hosts configuration. So yes, cf takeover should be enough ... Assuming all prerequisites are met.
