In-place conversion from 7-Mode to C-Mode is not supported. In 7-Mode both snapmirror and "vol copy" will preserve on-disk NTFS ACLs and all snapshots. You may need to adjust your CIFS shares confiuration to point to new volume though.

Yes, it is normal. Disks normally have two paths and it does not matter which path is used to address it. Use "disk zero spares" to zero it.

According to https://kb.netapp.com/support/index?page=content&id=2018128&locale=en_US files must be created via CIFS to have sparse bit set. This is about 7-Mode though; it could be different in C-Mode. I suggest opening case with NetApp to clarify. If you get an answer, post here, it is interesting.

Google search for "vmware fusion serial port" brings quite a lot of hits (including VMware documentation 🙂 ) like Serial Port to Named Pipe in VMware Fusion - or - Accessing to VM via serial console at VMware Fusion 5 the latter is even for *BSD 🙂

Yes, it is possible. The second step is not update of Data ONTAP - it is restoring of configuration on freshly reimaged boot media. You can skip it, but then some configuration will be reset to default (personally what I've encountered - autosupport configuration, ntp configuration, but there could potentially be more).

First, I would strongly advise to install exactly the same version as is currently installed on old head. If you want to update - update current head first, install the same version on new head. Look e.g. at document describing boot media replacement. In summary, you need to netboot the same version as you intend to install, stop at special boot menu, select 7 for "Install new software first", wait for two reboots, stop in special boot menu again and select 6 for "Update flash from backup config". Of course, second step is possible only after you connected and reassigned disks, because it restores configuration from root volume.

If you want cluster_mgmt LIF be on e0i interface, this interface should be connected to the 10.28.8.60/24 network (broadcast domain, VLAN, however it is called by your networking equipment). But my guess is that you simply need to create failover group for cluster_mgmt LIF that consists of e0M ports on all nodes. Anyway right now you just need to move cluster_mgmt LIF to e0M port to get access again.

I doubt it directly relates to being MetroCluster; and failover can be relevant to the extent that your controller experiences increased load for a long time. But APD on NFS with VMware somehow rings the bell ... I would start with following How to troubleshoot NFS APD (All-Paths-Down) issues on VMware ESXi

Yes, documentation is rather confusing as it mixes "HA" to mean "HA pair" (actually storage failover) and "HA mode" (special epsilon-less mode for two node cluster). You have to disable HA mode. It may be done automatically by wizard when you join the third node in 8.3 - at least, express guide does not explicitly mentions it. But in any case you should check and verify that it is disabled. SnapMirror won't be really slower, as volume migration between HA pairs will still be performed over 10G ethernet. But volume move in a cluster will be completely transparent to clients - there won't be any cut-over phase comparing with SM.

Default policy does not contain any rule, so access is denied by default. There no universal answer whether you should add rules to default policy or define your own - it all depends on your specific requirements.

@NEWNETAPP987 wrote:the network management manual it says that the cluster management IP cannot be on a vlan. No, it does not say it. It says that you cannot configure VLAN on port with cluster management role but this makes no sense - such role does not exist; this is most likely leftover from earlier versions. You can configure cluster management LIF on either data port or node management port. Usually it is configured on node management ports to cleanly separate management from data.

Is it possible to replace the IOM3 with IOM6 in a DS4243? No. At least, it is not supported. Sorry, clicked too early. You can attach DS4243 and DS4246 to the same stack. You cannot have more than one transtion between IOM3 and IOM6. There are couple of conditions more so it is possible that your specific configuration will be unsupported.

It should not panic. Some aggregates will be missing after takeover, that's all. Of course if root aggregate itself is missing, no takeover is possible.

Do you ask about storage failover in HA pair or about "HA mode"? The former is of course enabled between partners in each HA pair. The latter can and need to be enabled on 2 node cluster (single HA pair) only.

SnapDriver also supports VMDK on datastore; and it definitely cannot resize datastore itself. Note that VMFS cannot be reduced in size; so the only possibility to actually reduce space consumption is either use Storage vMotion to move data to new, smaller, datastore or enable thin provisioning and perform space reclamation.

By the way, you can update both Data ONTAP and BIOS at once by running "software install <BIOS>" and "download -d" immediately after running "software install <DOT>". I had problems doing it (download failed) so I would recommend doing it in two steps - first install and download Data ONTAP, then check installed BIOS version with "version -b" and install and download BIOS separately if newer version is available. Bundled BIOS is installed into boot media by "software install <DOT>". Not really. "software install" only upacks archive. You you need to run "download" to actually install it on boot media. May be you mean "software update"? It does both in one step.

When you are saying the latest common snapshot, are you referring to the last snaphost before SM relationship got broken off when I failover to DR site, which also means revert the volumes to the status as it was before failover? Yes. Would you please share the detailed command on how to revert the volume to the latest common snapshot which is ignore all updates on DR site? As in documentation - in advanced mode volume snapshot restore -vserver vs0.example.com -volume src_os -snapshot src_os_snap_3

Assuming you are speaking about SnapMirror - you can revert volume(s) to the latest common snapshot that was used as base for testing. But if you have production data, that's rather challenging exercise 🙂

In all the cases, the copy happens over the network over CIFS or NFS protocol. The copy does not happen on the storage side but the client. What about SMB3 copy offload? I think NetApp supports it?
