Yes, you can disconnect second SAS path to connect new shelves. Of course, make sure that both paths are fully functional before doing it. For ACP - it is no problem to temporary disconnect it at any time. Do not forget that each shelf needs unique ID and to change it you need to power cycle shelf. Double check new shelf ID before connecting it - changing it later will require downtime.

You will need to update host side components first. I recently hit this issue on upgrade of 7.2 to 8.0 - old DSM version had problems with 8.0 so path discovery and failover did not work reliably. You need to reboot hosts after DSM update so it does mean downtime for each server. In cluster you can move groups between nodes so downtime is minimized. I guess order of installation does not really matter - you will be updating all three components at once anyway. I would do host utilities, DSM, snapdrive.

Well, it is single mode so only one link is normally active. I do not have any single mode vifs to compare, unfortunately. Yes, I did it when moving connection from 1GbE to 10GbE. This was configuration with several Oracle databases on NFS. In this case it is up to you. I always say that if downtime is possible, take safe route and request downtime. You know, s*** happens...

You should be able to move zeroed spares to lower version. Make sure all disks in shelves are spares and zeroed, remove ownership. That basically gives you virgin state, the same as you get from NrtApp.

It was asked so many times ... You need destroy VIF and create new. This can be done non- disruptively using takeover/giveback. Takeover filer, change /etc/rc, giveback.

The main reason is to ensure you are using ports of different ASICs. Of course you may change cabling now, but should you ever connect third stack, you will face the same issue then. That's why you have partner controller after all.

Each controller in HA pair is independent system and manages own disks. HA partners do not have access to each other disks unless failover happens and one controller goes down. So what you see is correct.

Well, C-Mode may behave differently. I could not find any description of background disk firmware update in either manuals or KB, except short notice about bkg-firmware-update option. But nowhere about requirements for it. Was it WBT or ILT? Would be nice is someone from NetApp chimed in. P.S. today one really should qualify every statement with Data ONTAP mode to which it applies … ☺

having just one hot spare, also disables the NDU Firmware Upgrade for disks... Are you sure? It is the first time I hear it. Could you please provide a link to this information?

The issue is indeed that at this moment, Filer2 sees the disks and Filer1 is owner. Are you sure it is filer1? Sounds like disks are owned by neither filer. Show output of "disk show -v".

Before usermap.cfg can be applied, Data ONTAP needs to know user name for user ID (on NFS only user ID is available). This requires that either all users are defined in /etc/passwd or you are using some central user database like LDAP. Normally root user is present in /etc/passed, so it works. Other users are likely unknown so they fail.

There is no 4a because you can create only flexvol root. Option 4 does not change which disks are owned, but it will create root aggregate consisting of 3 disks, all other disks will be spare. Are you sure you are looking at the correct controller?

I am not that sure. Routes are tied to interfaces, so it may happen that when you down interface with current default route, you are left without any default route at all. Need to test.

I do not understand how resync (or rebaseline) can double space consumption. If you keep snapshots for several years, having one more snapshot during SnapMirror should not cause any issues.
