You do not need to migrate data, but you need downtime. Replace heads, reassign disks, clear mailbox, boot. It always makes sense to have identical versions on both old and new filers. I am not aware of any way to do it non-disruptively in 7-Mode. Luckily, we have no FC connections of LUNs to worry about if that helps with some answers. First off, is there ANY way to do this without disruption that does not involve standing up the 6280 with storage and migrating the data to it first? The docs all seem to point to the fact that this is not possible and that a complete outage to the system would be required. If the 6280 controllers are at a lower OnTap version than the 6240 (8.1.2), do the 6280 controllers need to be upgraded before they are attached to the disk shelves or can an OnTap upgrade be done afterwards? Just noticed that protocol latency legend is wrong. It says “No. of ops in millisecs” which makes no sense. I do not remember whether it was the same in 2.0.x.

Looks much more responsive than 2.0.2 (even after hostname resolution workaround). Also supports update. Congratulations! One comment. Going into network configuration I get “/etc/rc entries are not in correct order, changing configuration disabled”. Well, I would expect OCSM to fix it for me; requiring user to manually edit it just opens up yet another possibility for “human factor” …

For controller swap I would estimate 1hr downtime. It is basically physical installation and cabling and couple of commands afterwards. LUN may need more attention due to serial number change. If you do not have experience with it, plan couple of hours at least. Great to know that C-Mode can accomplish this. However this is an existing environment with both iSCSI LUNs and NFS shares. Could you go a little deeper into the actual controller swap? I understand there will be downtime, however I wonder how long (minutes? hours?) and how risky this is. So basically everything should be moved (from one controller to the other). In EMC you can change the Storage Processor used to present a LUN. I am not surprised about 2012 which has official native support for space reclamation, but it is quite interesting to see that 2008R2 also works. Do you have any statements from Microsoft regarding this? I mean, as long as it is undocumented feature, I would never recommend using it in production.

This effectively implies native support for space reclamation in windows. I am curious, which Windows version do you have? SP is integrated on motherboard, there is no way to get FAS without SP (for those models that support it). 01.12.2012, в 4:00, "CCOLEMAN_" <xdl-communities@communities.netapp.com<mailto:xdl-communities@communities.netapp.com>> написал(а): <https://communities.netapp.com/index.jspa> Re: cf hw_assist disregards "cf.hw_assist.enable OFF" created by CCOLEMAN_<https://communities.netapp.com/people/CCOLEMAN_> in Products & Solutions - View the full discussion<https://communities.netapp.com/message/95810#95810> Hey Guys, hw_assist relies on the RLM or SP as this is what separates it from a traditional cf_takeover. Also in your test plan, did you try to disable RLW on filers to see the performance impact of this new feature? I do not think you can (at least, using documented interfaces). RLW is integral part of how RAID works in these versions.

The Filer should be able to enumerate users from external NIS and LDAP sources from what I have read. Your filer does find user in LDAP, does not it? What would be the point of configuring the Filer to read from an LDAP directory if it cannot even enumerate user information from the LDAP/NIS directory? User information does not magically appear in LDAP all by itself. Someone has to enter it there. Windows AD is never using plain text passwords so it is never entered in AD.

If you want to backup NetApp directly, you need NDMP. It may be possible to map share from NetApp on Windows server and backup this mapped share from this Windows server, but this question is probably better answered on Symantec forums ☺

Yes, you are right, this is exactly what I mean. I would recommend to keep vol0 if at all possible. Some settings related to LUN/initiator groups will be lost and need to be manually recreated again unless original root volume is preserved. So I would try - Relocate all volumes (including root volume) to external disk shelves and make sure no internal disks are used - Then simply do head swap reusing existing root volume. This will ensure all settings are preserved - Then connect any additional shelves if they exist If aggregates are built using both internal and external disks, it becomes more complicated indeed and I think the best is to arrange for professional service with experience to do it.

You have to explicitly maintain plain text passwords for users in AD. There is no way to reconstruct it from native AD data. IIRC there were utilities to do it. Is using Kerberos an option? This would eliminate need to use and maintain plain text passwords.

Do you have any links to what “SCSI name” actually is? Data ONTAP manuals explain how to enable/disable it but do not really explain what it is … BTW documentation says it is disabled by default for Windows.

Do you have separate aggregates for internal and external drives? If yes - Where is root aggregate located? - Do you need to preserve data on internal drives?

As far as I know it should be working. Did you test with SnapTest whether basic configuration is correct? Which version (service pack) do you use? Is SnapProtect itself installed on local disks or on NFS volumes?
