In the past there was GUI utility to edit Unix file mode. It seems to have disappeared from toolchest. There are command line tools that I myself never tried: http://support.netapp.com/NOW/download/tools/na_chstuff/ You may use something like SFTP client to control permissions and even ownership (I briefly tested WinSCP and it allows changing file owner/group and mode bits). But it also means you have to ensure unique UID for every user and setup LDAP for Unix user database as well. You still need valid CIFS-to-Unix user mapping. It is independent from CIFS authentication mechanism.

Oops, sorry, I messed it up. TR-3505 is for 8.0 or earlier; current one is TR-3958, which is for 8.1. Licensing has changed, some commands have changed, volume size limits have changed, etc. TR-3849 is still available as I mentioned, but it is already old now.

Is there a way that I can mount the drive as a user from LDAP and have the security tab show to change permissions from a UNIX world No. That's how NetApp works. If you use cifs setup option 4, NetApp presents shares as FAT filesystems which do not support ACLs. It is documented in File Access and Protocols Management Guide. I am surprised you can access NetApp in the first place. Option 4 means plain text passwords, which are disabled by default in Windows for years.

Sorry, slipped finger. So - I am a bit confused. First you say "No Windows whatsoever" and then you say "mixed environment of Windows and MAC". So are there existing Windows clients (irrespectively of NetApp)? If yes - how they are organized? Is there existing Windows domain and Active Directory infrastructure?

Well, it is still available on field portal, so try asking your NetApp contact for a copy. It is not clear how much value it adds - there is really no reason to not use 8.1.

I am not sure I correctly understand your question. You can script it also without any external software, just create file with sequence of 'dump' commands and 'source' it. NetWorker allows you to specify 'All' as save set which dynamically queries existing volumes and initiates backup session for each of them. No, that’s not possible. Dump is always per-volume. Using external backup software it may be possible to query NetApp for existing volumes and automatically initiate backup for all of them - this is as close to “entire filer” as you can get. But if you are using dump on NetApp directly - you have to do it by volume.

Yes, it should copy all file attributes including security descriptors. You probably need to ensure target directory has the same security style as source.

No. SnapMirror is only between volumes or qtrees. You can use ndmpcopy to copy other data (but it is not incremental, so make sure you stop access to source folder or use snapshot).

You can add SSD to aggregate to convert it to flash pool at any time later. Aggregate which gets SSD added will also benefit from them. Adding just three disks means two thirds will be lost. So you probably want to add some more. As of today the only production thing on it is my virtual desktop, which can be moved rapidly if I need to make changes. The end goal will be to have our Vmware View Dedicated and Linked Clone Desktops using FC LUNs to two ESXi 5.1.0 Clusters and User Roaming Profile, Redirected Folders, Home Directories, Data Share all being CIFS Shares. I have been reading over several good docs and threads on Flash Pool Configuration https://forums.netapp.com/thread/37372, TR-4070, as well and other stuff I found on the web. One question that I have not been able to answer is this, do I need to configure the flash pool prior to configuring the CIFS and LUNs? Also to properly configure RAID DP I need more than three disks. There were reports that booting DOT 8.x on 7.x root volume without proper upgrade procedure resulted in extended outage and had to be fixed by NetApp support. So unless you get explicit support ability statement from NetApp, safe way is to setup new filer and transfer data (I would use SnapMirror) Отправлено с iPhone 20.12.2012, в 21:43, "RICCO4400" <xdl-communities@communities.netapp.com<mailto:xdl-communities@communities.netapp.com>> написал(а): <https://communities.netapp.com/index.jspa> FAS3020 Head swap created by RICCO4400<https://communities.netapp.com/people/RICCO4400> in Data ONTAP - View the full discussion<https://communities.netapp.com/message/97193#97193> Hi all I 've read a number of article on the subject. "Is not supported" as in "will not boot" or "will boot but complaint loudly"? The latter is perfectly OK for one time head swap boot. Just use "halt -f" to shutdown filer. You better have console access to verify, when filer is down. Then when you finished with disks issue "autoboot" command to boot it again. You need to shutdown both controllers in active/active pair. Volume names on the same controller must be unique. LUN names include full path to LUN, so full path must be obviously unique, but the last part can be the same, i.e. it is quite normal to have /vol/vol1/some.lun and /vol/vol2/some.lun

The point of metrocluster is if you lose an entire computer room, so a controller and all of its shelves, it will automatically failover and present all storage from the remaining node. No, it won't. Please do not spread totally false and misleading information.

You missed words “completely” and “including storage”. It is of course possible to failover if node goes down. It is not possible to automatically failover if entire site (node + storage) goes down. Please ask Google about “split brain”. You need third instance to resolve it, it can be implemented as part of MSCS or as separate tie breaker. Or manually, when administrator accepts responsibility for declaring one node dead.

I found CDP support in Data ONTAP to be extremely useful. Unfortunately, recently I had nasty surprise with Nexus - it apparently does not support CDP anymore, only LLDP. Is it possible to enable LLDP support in Data ONTAP? If not - any plans to implement it?

Yes, that’s possible and I did it several times, but do not forget - hot shelf removal is not supported, so you need to plan downtime to disconnect “seeding shelf”.

For NFSv4 you must setup user mapping between server and client; NFSv4 does not use numeric UID anymore; it is using user names and server will lookup names locally. Unless you have centralized user database (LDAP, NIS) I suggest you should use NFSv3.
