There were quite a number of performance related fixes in subsequent patch releases. You could try the latest 8.1P2 to see if it improves situation.

Normally software update makes all required adjustments in environment to automatically boot new version. If it did not happen it could mean either deviation from update procedure or a bug. The former we do not know (do you have any logs of this?) and if you are sure everything was done correctly, you need to open support case so possible bug can be investigated.

Multipath does give you increased bandwidth. And as opposed to link aggregation, this increased bandwidth is real, deterministic and does not depend on selecting “the right” IP address or praying to have correct MAC address for better distribution. Multipathing is better than link aggregation in all cases when we deal with block access.

No, it is not possible. What do you try to achieve? In Unix it is possible to build almost arbitrary directory structure using mount points and/or symbolic links.

There are a lot of /etc/rc and /etc/hosts (and other HA) checks described in Config Advisor 3.0 Installation and Administration Guide (Appendix A).

On filer_a do “snapmirror release volume_cifs filer_b:volume_cifs”. This should release old snapshot (remove “snapmirror” flag) and make it possible to remove it. It may fail due to volume being read-only on filer_a now. In this case you will need to temporarily break snapmirror, release relationship and resync.

Yes, it is possible. I never used System Manager for this so cannot comment on its behavior. Just edit /etc/snapmirror.conf manually. But you may want to open support case because this sounds more like a bug in System Manager. BTW you could use "*/5" meaning "every five minutes"; it would make entry shorter and more readable.

It was not "removed". It was added in 7.3 after the point when 8.0 was forked. 8.0 has feature parity with approximately 7.3.2 (or may be 7.3.3, do not remember exactly).

ndmpcopy does not create target volume - it must exist before command is executed. You have to create it manually. What you did, is to copy content /vol/testVolume into directory on volume /vol/vol0.

Where have you got this “halt -d” from? It should have been just the “halt”. Have you used Upgrade advisor to generate procedure? Also standard documentation does not tell you to use “halt -d” either. Netboot is not supported in 8.x beyond special menu, so I am not really sure what you get using 2 at this stage. The best is now to call support. It could be as simple as tweaking some environment variables but could require some more actions. Reinstalling CF may work but I am not sure whether it is the only missing step in upgrade.

I am afraid I missed the actual problem. Do you mean that snapmirror session unexpectedly stops? At least, that is how I interpret It completes and remains snapmirrored for about 8 hours, and then it breaks again

I havent tested myself but isnt a format supposed to write plenty of 0´s to the disk and ontap realizes this as sort of "zero´d disk space" and doesnt fill up? I have never heard about it. Of course, using A-SIS is one possibility to reduce physical space consumption, it will do exactly what you mention
