Yes, after support site revamp it is pretty well hidden. https://support.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs/hardware/NetApp/cs_migration/index.htm?isLegacy=true

In case of HA pair controllers are hot swappable, but replacement must be exactly the same model. In this case you cannot even attach (all) disks from FAS2240 to FAS3210 because FAS2240 has internal disks.

This usually happens during head swap, when new head comes as full filer package with own disks. Then if you simply reassign old filer disks, you end up with two diskroot's. Which one is then selected for booting? Is it random? Or are there any rules for it? For models with external shelves I always connect new shelves only after head swap is finished. But for the case of integrated disks it is not that easy, and requires more fuss around. The less manual work, the more reliable is procedure

Net2 does not contain instructions for head swap from FAS3020/FAS3050 to FAS62xx. Unfortunately. Sorry for confusion. Somehow I automatically assumed that it is an old model that does not support Data ONTAP 8.x. Of course you can upgrade from FAS3040/3070 just fine using standard procedure.

That is exactly “booting 8.x on root volume from 7G”. Do you have statement from NetApp that this method is supported? This would make life much easier. In 8.x Data ONTAP is no more kept on root volume, no post-swap upgrade is strictly speaking necessary (root volume content is udated automatically from archive on boot media).

1. There is no specific licenses needed for conversion. FAS62xx comes with own licenses and you are supposed to install them after upgrade. If old system has more (or different set of) licenses, you are supposed to delete those, that are not available for new one. 2. Head swap is always disruptive with 7-Mode. 3. Tough. See below. As of now there is no real documentation I am aware of dealing with this. Simply booting 8.x on root volume with 7.x may work, but I have not seen official statement of support (if someone can correct me - excellent). The most bullet proof way I can think of is to loan a head supporting both 7G and 8.x and do two consecutive head swaps with Data ONTAP upgrade in between. The task is simple to perform but non-trivial to plan. If you do not have good experience with NetApp it really makes sense to arrange for professional service to do it.

But it will be started again after reboot. I wish there was “cifs unsetup” or similar. I am too interested in how to return filer to “CIFS uninitialized” state. I guess removing all files /etc/cifs* should do the trick, but there may be some registry entries left over. Anyone? ... OK, I had chance to capture config before and after CIFS setup. Yes, I came to the same conclusion as well. I guess the only way to enable passwordless login in this case would be Kerberos, but as far as I can tell it is not supported by NetApp for user authentication.

IPv6 is not supported in 8.0. I just tested IPv6 on freshly installed 8.1.1 sim under VMware Player 4.0.3 over host-only interface. Sim was minimally setup - just IPv6 enabled, no explicit address. So both sim and player were running with link local addreses. In this config I could ping sim IPv6 from host but attempt to login with PuTTY resulted in simsim> No route to host Thu Aug 23 22:28:20 MSK [simsim:openssh.invalid.channel.req:warning]: SSH client (SSH-2.0-PuTTY_Release_0.62) from fe80::e990:e9fa:34e9:b6c sent unsupported channel request (10, x11-req). No route to host No route to host I found following in Network Guide: FreeBSD user applications like NTP, ASUP, and NDMP cannotcommunicate with destinations that have IPv6 link- local addresses. I was not sure whether it applied to SSH as well, but after explicitly setting site local address with the same prefix I was able to correctly login into sim with PuTTY using IPv6. Of course the problem could have been simply different prefix used by DOT and Windows for link local address, but I do not know how can I set prefix for either of them.

Well … looking at VM layout change I doubt it would have been possible. E.g. 8.1 used RAM disk based varfs and stored NVRAM in regular disk, while 8.1.1 has disk based varfs and stores NVRAM in separate vmdk. You really cannot make it by simply updating kernel.

At which point? It has to be the very first action before simulator is booted even once. I never managed to recover after I changed sysid under initialized simulator.

Actually I did "upgrade" from 8.0 to 8.1 a while ago by replacing CF card VMDK and it worked. Now I was about to finalize and document procedure (make sure varfs is preserved etc) but found that VM structure of 8.1.1 is completely different from 8.1. Pity. I'll look at new layout, but of course if it may change even between minor dot releases, it leaves little hope for even non-supported procedure

You probably misunderstand the problem. Real user (domain user) does have the required capabilities, but there does not appear to be any way to let SSH authenticate domain user using public key. I could not find any information in documentation or knowledge base. If you try to login as domain user using full domain name, public key authentication does not work. If you try to strip domain part, you can use public key, but in this case NetApp apparently does not see this user as domain user (and does not grant capabilities).

Have you tried to put key in directory with full name, i.e. sshd/WIN\user/.ssh/authorized_keys? Note that backslash is actual part of name.

Where have you got it from? Tier table for older models is in https://fieldportal.netapp.com/DirectLink.aspx?documentID=49422&contentID=63926 For newer models as far as I know there is no tiers any more, rather order numbers are model specific.

I cannot find any disk with vendor string HUS156045VLF400 (or any HUS* for that matter) in current qualified disks database. So the question remains - where have you got these disks from? It is not supported to use third party disks in NetApp. NetApp is using customized disk firmware.

Actually, by default it seems to use HTTPS, and there were known issues when OCSM could not connect to DOT 8.x if https was not enabled there (usually after upgrade). It probably falls back to HTTP though in your case. Which DOT version do you have? Check httpd.admin.ssl.enable. Is SSL setup (secureadmin)?
