Hi, could anyone please explain what these two options are for: cifs.home_dir.generic_share_access_level 3 cifs.home_dir.generic_share_access_warn on I can't access my homedir via \\filer\~ and i wonder if it has something to do with these undocumented options. \\filer\%username% works. Its a FAS2520 with ONTAP8.2.2 Markus

Thin volume and thin vmdisk... and i think i also activated compression (not inline) for these tests. On our biggest production-datastore with lots of win2k3, win2k8 and linux machines we still experience a 40% dedup saving, which seems normal to me. Looking at other datastores i manage, a ratio of 30-50% shouldn't be a big problem, always depending on the content. Dedup is perfect for VDI and should give you way higher rates, no matter if it's Linux or Windows. In the end it's all about identical 4k blocks...

Well, i think the System Manager-Command does the same as sis start -s ... I once tried a similar thing and got to a dedup-ratio of over 98% (200 Linux VMs, all created from the same template on a nfs-datastore), so it is possible and dedup works really good. Sorry, but i can't say why it's not working in your environment.

Is there any support for 'low-level' operations on a VVOL-volume? Like for example i've destroyed my vcenter-vmdk and i want to restore it on the console using snap restore. I've mounted the nfs-volume this vvol uses as an endpoint and saw something like this: # ll total 18248980 drwxr-xr-x 3 nobody nobody 4096 Aug 28 13:20 rfc4122.1249b69c-4585-4453-84af-f13dfded0655 drwxr-xr-x 3 nobody nobody 4096 Aug 27 19:08 rfc4122.22ba6d91-c0a5-4401-a82a-03b4f1bfc72b -rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 402653184 Aug 28 12:59 rfc4122.2de5b95c-436b-4d46-aadc-485cb70a3333.vmdk -rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 4294967296 Aug 28 12:55 rfc4122.3a706c55-bb32-4fec-a5b9-cb5fa1d8d36d.vmdk drwxr-xr-x 3 nobody nobody 4096 Aug 28 13:23 rfc4122.3ddbc7c9-015c-47dc-a99d-53a427a99103 -rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 4294967296 Aug 28 13:23 rfc4122.469c3484-523d-4217-8fa1-a5a1ded19785.vmdk -rw-r--r-- 1 nobody nobody 4294967296 Aug 28 12:51 rfc4122.4eb96db6-e65d-430c-9a13-ca90474fba70.vmdk ... how am i supposed to know which file is should restore using snap restore-file?

Hello Graham Were you able to install ESXi 6.0 and vCenter 6.0? No Problems here Were you able to install NetApp VASA VP and VSC and register the VASA VP to vCenter? I had some Problems installing the VSC (see keystore-Problem above) and was unable to use VASA VP until I used :9443 as the Port - but that is documented (my fault) Were you able to provision a VVol Datastore using the NetApp workflow? Yes - the Plugin was a bit slow recognizing a new flexvol but it worked. I saw this Error after the creation: Were you able to create VM Storage Profiles that match the capabilities of the VVol Datastore? Yes - I also assigned a Storage Profile to a non-VVol Datastore - is there a way to remove this Storage Profile from the Datastore using the VSC? There seems to be no 'unmap'-Function Were you able to provision Virtual Machines into the VVol Datastore? Yes, worked on the first try Have you taken SnapShots of the VVol Virtual Machine? Yes - Creation and Deletion worked Have you made a clone of the VVol Virtual Machine? Yes - I created a Template and deployed a few VMs using it. RapidClones didn't work What additional feedback do you have for NetApp or VMware to improve VVols? The integration could be better (Integration in the normal Datastore Creation Workflow of VMware)

I experienced the same problem - here is the solution: After the VSC setup, open a command prompt and change to <VSC installation directory\bin>: C:\Program Files\NetApp\Virtual Storage Console\bin> vsc.bat ssl setup -generate-passwords After that the service should startup without any error

Seems like VSC tries to get a list of capable controllers. As you said, NFS-to-NFS online migration is still not supported with this version, so there is no (capable) controller found. Hello, i installed VSC4.1 on a clean Windows 2008R2 Server, registered it with our vCenter 5.1 and activated it on the Client. The Controllers are recognized at the 'Monitoring and Host Configuration' So far so good, but when i try to migrate a misaligned machine, this error appears: How can this be solved?

Not really... i also opened a ticket and sent perflogs but all they found are some misaligned VMs and that i need to run reallocate to fix fragmentation (Optimization Level 4). We had a 1.5 hour 'blackout' due to this and i somewhat doubt that it's because of a fragmented Filesystem. If you experience this again, run perfstats and send them to NetApp - maybe that will help them to find the problem. The NetApp filer fails terrible here and i'm really disappointed

Hi David, we installed 8.1.1RC1 to finally make use of our Flash Modules and the Problem is still there but not as extreme as before. There is still a NFS Service-'Blackout' of ~10 seconds but this is not recognized by our VMware Cluster like the 60 seconds before with 8.1GA. 8.1P2 seems to have the same performance related fixes as 8.1.1RC1... I don't know if it's better because of the Flash Modules or the new version, sorry

Same here, all volumes are set to no_atime_updates We've got PAM cards but couldn't use them with the 8.1GA because they are not supported (I know that there are Patch-Releases and RCs out there where this issue is fixed)

Sorry, the .50 was just a typo... i simplified the config to make it easier to understand what i'm trying to say. i guess you are both right, the filer can't resolve the unix username ('user' in this case), wcc -u user shows that ther is no passwd entry. i thought this is 'fixed' by the usermap.cfg because this 'user' is simply a local user on the client and not known to any directory service. i will try the aborzenkovs solution, thanks for your help!

Sorry, but what kind of root access permissions? The nfs-export has root-permission and the volume has read-write-access for everyone. I also tried switching cifs.nfs_root_ignore_acl to on but that didn't help.

Hello, i'm trying to mount a NFS-Export from a Linux-PC and ran into some Problems. First some info about what i'm trying to do: I've got a folder which should be shared between Windows and Linux Users. This folder is a simple folder inside a NTFS-security-styled volume and it works perfectly for all Windows-clients. On the Linux-side, everytime i try to access this folder with anyone except root, permission is denied. exportfs: /vol/vol_data/folder -sec=sys,rw=172.30.1.40,root=172.30.1.40 usermap.cfg: DOMAIN\Administrator <= 172.30.1.40:* In my understanding this means that the IP 172.30.1.50 is fully trusted and every Unix-User coming from this IP is mapped to the Domain-Administrator. Well, it works for the root-Account, but not for any other user: [root@linux mnt]# mount -t nfs netapp:/vol/vol_data/folder /mnt/mountpoint [root@linux mnt]# ls -la drwxr-xr-x. 6 root root 4096 31.
