Hi
So basically Netapp Support (and blogs) are telling me Netapp VSC is not supported for Backup/Restore of VCloud Director Vm's. What's the point with that?
I'm using Netapp VSC 6.1 in Vsphere 6 for backup/restore my non-VCD cluster VM's. Surely i dont want to buy an expensive extra product just for backup/restore the Vcloud Director Cluster VM's. I want to use VSC for that.
Why i cant use Netapp VSC for backup/restore VMs in a VCloud Director Cluster (version 8.x)? I'm not speaking about a integration of it into VCD gui so the VCD Tenants can do backup/restore on their own - i simply want to backup/restore my VCD Cluster VM's in VSphere Web Client just like the VM's in the normal cluster.
Any advices?

Hi System: - VSphere 5.5 upd2 (Appliance) - VSC 5.01p on a Windows 2008 R2 I've tried to install VSC 6.0: 1) Installed it (on a Windows 2012 R2 Host --- not the same host as the current VSC 5.01 Installation is running on) 2) I've removed the Webcenter UI as described in Documenation: ***** In a virtual appliance console window, use a Secure Shell (SSH) to log into the vCenter Server as root. Change to the vsphere-client-serenity directory: cd /var/lib/vmware/vsphere-client/vc-packages/vsphere-client-serenity Stop the vSphere Web Client: Service vsphere-client stop Remove the directories containing the UI extensions: rm -rf com.netapp* Restart the vSphere Web Client: Service vsphere-client star ******** 3) I've registered the new VSC 6.0 to this Vcenter Appliance via https://localhost:8143/Register.html 4) Everything seems to work with VSC 6.0 in the Vsphere Web Gui except when i try to create a backup job there are no Datastore Entities to choose; i can choose the Datacenter but there are no Datastores to choose in the Select Field. I had to roll back the Vsphere Appliance to the pre-VSC 6.0 install for now and working again with VSC 5.5. I've checked for bugs regarding this but found nothing so far. Any Advices? Regards

Yes you are right; i didnt read that properly. Regarding the Dedup Bug: In my case the Dedup Bug consumed about 900gb in a 1TB Volume, so 90 %. After i've done a "sis start -s /volname" only 100gb of the 1 TB Volume were filled.. Regards

Hi Have the same problem. The problem is a Dedup Bug. The fingerprint database fills up the place in the volume. Solution from Netapp Support: *************** Workaround A cleanup of the fingerprint database on a volume impacted by this issue is accomplished by running the following command: > s <vol> Note: Potential exists for storage efficiency to be decreased after executing this manual work-around. Consult NetApp Technical Support before executing 'sis start -s' on the affected volume. This is a very long-running process as it is building a new copy of the Fingerprint Database (FPDB) and then purging the old to reclaim the volume space. If the workload on the storage system imposed by running sis start -s is extremely large, a support engineer can guide the customer to use the following advanced-mode command on the impacted volume: > sis check –d <vol> Note: Dedupe operations for new data will not be performed while 'sis check -d' is running, expect when additional volume space is to be consumed while running this command. Free volume space equal to the size of the fingerprint database file is needed to run the sis check command. Ensure that there is sufficient free space prior to running sis check. Additionally, the -d option should always be used to clear any existing SIS checkpoints on the volume. The presence of a checkpoint will delay the results of the workaround and could also result in an out-of-space condition. If possible, upgrade to a fixed release of Data ONTAP instead of executing the above commands/work-arounds. The FPDB's will be purged of stale records without having to run the above commands during the volume's next scheduled deduplication job. A maximum of 8 deduplication jobs can be executed at one time; subsequent jobs will be put in queue. 4. Solution 5. Users should upgrade to Data ONTAP release 8.1.2P4 or later. 6. After upgrading to Data ONTAP release 8.1.2P4 or later, the first time deduplication is run on each volume it will automatically remove these stale fingerprints. During this time you may experience deduplication taking longer than expected. Subsequent operations will complete at normal operating times. This process of removing the stale fingerprints will temporarily consume additional space in both the deduplication enabled FlexVol volumes and their containing aggregates. 7. If your FlexVol volume or the aggregate containing the FlexVol volume is 70% full or more it is recommended to run the "sis start -s /vol/<volname>" command for systems that are on 7-Mode or "volume efficiency start -vserver <vservername> -volume <volname> -scan-old-data true" command for systems that are running clustered Data ONTAP. This command will delete the existing fingerprint database and build a new one on the volumes and aggregates. This may be a long running operation; however it will not require additional space and will resolve any pre-existing issues with stale fingerprints. Deleting the deduplication metadata does not affect the savings already on disk or the access to the logical data. *************

Hello Community I'm sorry to bother you with that silly question. But I just can't find the download-site for the community-Plugins for PostgreSQL. I found following article: https://communities.netapp.com/community/products_and_solutions/databases_and_enterprise_apps/snapcreator/blog/2013/09/06/how-to-install-and-configure-community-plugin-in-snap-creator There's a link to the github repository => https://github.com/NetApp But unfortunately I can't find the sc-postgres Plugin. Can someone please send me the link where I can find the Plugin? Thanks a lot in advance. Marco

Thanks for advice. But I've seen today that the Alarms via DFM are now coming for the overused qtree quota. It was triggered late in the evening. It looks like it needs a few hours for this alarm event to notify. It took about 3-4 hours until it triggered the dfm alarm ("Qtree almost full" Event). Other "standard" DFM Eventalarms (ex. Volume Growth) doesnt show that "alarm latency" and are usually coming immediatly. But i can live with that "alarm latency" for this event for now. Best Regards + Thanks

Hi Configuration in /etc/quotas: * tree@/vol/nfs_volumename 500M - 250M - - Outpout of quota report: vfilernfs@filer10> quota report /vol/nfs_volumename/qtreename K-Bytes Files Type ID Volume Tree Used Limit Used Limit Quota Specifier ----- -------- -------- -------- --------- --------- ------- ------- --------------- tree 1 nfs_volumename qtreename 511976 512000 4 - /vol/nfs_volumename/qtreename So i've filled the qtree. Quota works i cant write in qtree anymore. But i want a Alarm Email via DFM/OpsMgr for this qtree when threshold (in this case 250M) is reached and when qtree is full. But nothing happens in DFM; not warning in the Webgui and not Emailalarm (other alarms of DFM working fine). In DFM i have a "Notification Alarm" for "All" Events with Severity "Warning". This does not generate a alarm for the quota. So i've made a "Notification Alarm" for Event "User Disk Space Quota Full". This doesnt not generate any alarm at all regarding quota issues. Whats wrong? Does it has something to do with the fact that i have a qtree quota? I dont find any Events "qtree disk quota full"...only the "user disk space quota..." events in DFM for configure. When i check the volume regarding dfm thresholds options: C:\Users\Administrator>dfm volume get vfilernfs:/nfs_volumename Volume: vfilernfs:/nfs_voluname Volume Full Threshold (%): 90 Volume Nearly Full Threshold (%): 85 Volume Full Threshold Interval: 00:00:00 Enable User Quota Alerts, not available for vserver volumes: yes User Quota Full Threshold (%), not available for vserver volumes: 90 User Quota Nearly Full Threshold (%), not available for vserver volumes: 80 Volume Snap Reserve Full Threshold(%): 90 Volume Nearly No First Snapshot Threshold(%), not available for vserver volumes: 80 Volume No First Snapshot Threshold(%), not available for vserver volumes: 90 Volume Space Reserve Nearly Depleted Threshold(%): 80 Volume Space Reserve Depleted Threshold(%): 90 Volume Growth Event Minimum Change (%): 1 Volume Quota Nearly Overcommitted Threshold (%): 95 Volume Quota Overcommitted Threshold (%): 100 Volume Snapshot Count Threshold: 250 Volume Too Old Snapshot Threshold : 52 weeks Volume Nearly Over Deduplicated Threshold (%): 140 Volume Over Deduplicated Threshold (%): 150 What means "not available for vserver volumes" in this context (see bold written). Is "vserver" a "vfiler"?....my volume with quota is located inside a separate vfiler and not in vfiler0.... How can i configure Email alarms for qtree quotas full and reaching threshold (thold) level? Best Regards

Thanks. Helps me a lot. Question: When i create the Protection Policy (Step 6 - "Assumptions") i define schedules for "Primary Data" Backup and "Primary data to Backup". Then again (Step 5 - "Create a Schedule") i create another scheduling at the Oncommand Level? What does that mean? Why there is another scheduling at the "oncommand" Level and what happens then...i mean we have already the scheduling at the Protection Policy which makes the Backup and then the Snapvault...? Best Regards

Hi Mmh, I dont think your answer is right...? I guess you're talking about "Virtual Storage Console" which has the Backup and Restore functions (aka Snap Manager). But this way you can only make local (on the filer where the volumes) Backups/Snapshots of the VM's. You cant make backups of VM's to another Storage System. I'm also searching for Information if there is a Ossv Version which works with Esx/Vsphere 4.x (with NFS based vmdks) because i would like to backup the vmdks to another storage system. It look to me that there is currently no OSSV version which support ESX 4.x with vmdks on NFS. The latest 3.0.1 OSSV Version only supports Esx 3.x (and without NFS Based vmdks.) So Virtual Storage Console (the vsphere plugin from Netapp) and OSSV are different things... or?
