SnapMirror between DOT 7.3 and 8.0

Hi All,

Need all your help on following....

Customer is having FAS2020 and storing all their VMware VMs in it. VMs includes MS Exchange 2010, MS SQL and some other windows servers.

As requirements increased they are planing to opt for new FAS 2240 storage and use existing 2020 as their DR storage. In this scenario what are the available options for replicating data from Primary site to DR site? As I understand the for Volume SnapMirror the destination should have equal or higher version of Data Ontap, since 2240 comes with version 8. and 2020 doesn't support ver 8, is Qtree SnapMirror can use for this purpose? (Customer is planing to SME, SMVI and SM for Sql)

Best regards,

Roshan

Hi Roshan and welcome to the Community!

You are correct that VSM will not work in this scenario, whilst QSM will work. Be wary though about differences between two types of replications:

Hi Radek,

Thank you for your answer. Read through both links you sent.

Need one more clarification. With QSM will Snap Mangers (SMVI, SME, etc) work?

Well, that's a good question.

SnapManagers will do work locally of course, but they will not integrate with QSM for remote replication of local backups.

This can be addressed by triggering QSM updates outside of SnapManager, but would require scripting - this will arguably make the whole setup more complicated.

Thanks again Radek,

So there is no simple way to utilize the customers existing FAS2020 as a DR storage after buying the new 2240 ? That is a big drawback as customer's 2020 is not even one year old. Actual scenario of this customer is they are having two 2020 boxes one as primary and another in DR site with SnapMirroring. Customers plan was to have new 2240 for production and keep one 2020 in primary site for local backup and other one in DR site. Is there anyway that SnapVault can help in this situation?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like the 2020 doesn't fit nicely into the overall solution, indeed.

SnapVault can be integrated with SnapManager products, but:

- you need to set up Protection Manager for it to work

- unlike with SnapMirror, there is no easy way of replicating changes back in a fail-over / fail-back scenario
