when i create a vol/lun in netapp for a rdm mapping on vsphere. Is it necessary to create a qtree or will /vol/volume/lun work?
Qtree is not strictly required - a LUN inside a volume will work fine.
It may be useful though if you use / plan to use SnapVault or Qtree SnapMirror.
