Sarek - Are the SATA drives on adapter 0b ? It looks like they're associated. You can also use the 'Syslog Translator' tool on the support site to give you more info about err messages. Interestingly, the 'ses.inconsistent.config' message didn't come up with any results when I ran it on the tool. Was that the full identifier for the message ? What version of Data ONTAP was this ? Matt - It shouldn't be that complicated, or am I missing something in your question ? SnapVault has always been about being able to retain Snapshot Copies on the destination for much longer than you retain them on the source. I'd do this the same in Cluster Mode as in 7-Mode. For an example: Create an update policy on the secondary with '-name monthly' using the 'job schedule create' command. On the source create a monthly snapshot policy with 'volume snapshot policy create' and use the 'snapmirror-label' parameter to specify a named label (monthly) for snapvault to use. Use 'snapmirror policy create' on secondary to make a monthly vaulting policy. Add a rule on the secondary to retain the monthly snapshots with 'snapmirror policy add-rule' and 'snapmirror-label monthly -keep 120'. See also the Data Protection Guide documentation: https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1366833/html/frameset.html This would retain the monthly snapshots on the secondary for 10 years. Henry - Thank you, very much. No need for any salutes, I just try to do my best to do my duty. Apologies for a slow reply - it's midnight here in Hong Kong. I think I need to go to bed ! VSAs would be used to back up the host VM for the database. The database aware iDataAgent should be installed on the VM itself to coordinate the back up of the DB files. You say 'SQL Database', but not which one. There's an iDataAgent for MSSQL, there's another for Oracle DBs. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E. NetAppMagic - You're very welcome. Yes, IO density is about disks. NetApp controllers are all about the disks they're driving. It's easy to spin up a stack of disk shelves, it's another thing to be able to drive them with a lot of IO. All of the factors I mentioned are of concern when sizing a solution for a given set of workloads. They're all questions your sales team should be asking you, or you should be asking the customer if you're the sales engineer. Your original question was whether there were tools available. I had mentioned the Sizer tool that is available on the Field Portal for this use. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E. Jaime - Yes, there is a use case. VMs should be quiesced before the snapshot is taken. There are SnapProtect Virtual Storage Agents (VSAs) for Hyper-V and VMware . Though I don't find KVM support documented in SnapProtect, you may wish to look at the following link on Simpana with KVMs: http://documentation.commvault.com/hds/v10/article?p=prod_info/unix_virtualization/right_kvm.htm ( SnapProtect is Commvault Simpana with NetApp specific supported mods. ) I hope this response has been helpful to you. Jaime - You can back up NetApp NFS volumes with SnapProtect. There is the NetApp NAS iDataAgent. Unlike other agents, which get installed on the host, the NAS iDataAgent is installed on the CommServe, not on the filer. NetAppMagic - Yes, there are tools we use to size solutions for customers. The Sizer tool is available for partners on the Field Portal. Capacity is not an easy part. IO density is the big question on the back end. This is a factor of IOs/TB. Reads v writes, and randomness of the IO also factor in. Rate of change and retention are another factor to be considered. 'What is the DR strategy?' is another question to be asked. Networking on the front end needs to take fail over into consideration. DR replication also needs to be considered for network. CPU to drive the disks and the network is the last question I usually take into account. It's not an easy question to answer. We teach advanced classes on 7-Mode and Cluster Mode performance that cover these topics. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E. Lukas - With Unified Manager 5.X Performance and Protection/Provisioning were in the same application. There were many APIs to query for performance data in 5.X. Performance Manager for Cluster Mode is now a separate application, at version 1.0. I haven't yet seen any APIs to query it. The one method I've seen to pull data out of Perf Mgr 1.0 is to export CSV files. From the documentation: "You can export information about all data displayed on the page you are viewing to a comma-separated variable (CSV) file. You can then open the file in a text editor or spreadsheet application." See the documentation at https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1364220/html/frameset.html There is the OnCommand Unified Manager 6.1 API Developer Guide: https://library.netapp.com/ecmdocs/ECMP1416663/html/frameset.html You can also look at the DFM 6.0 APIs listed in the ZExplore utility that comes with the Manageability SDK. Notice that the performance and other APIs listed for DFM 5.2 aren't there for 6.0. I hope this response has been helpful to you... At your service, Eugene E. rbauman - You're very welcome. Yes, It is SnapVault I'd recommend for your needs. The reson to use SnapVault over SnapMirror is that you can retain snapshots for a longer schedule on the secondary. With SnapMirror you copy the full volume with snapshots, and you'd have to retain all of those older snapshots on the primary. SnapVault would allow you to retain the old snaps on the secondary SATA drives without retaining them on the primary. You'd be able to free up the old snap space on those expensive 15K spindles. This is the value proposition of SnapVault. I'd use DFM aka now OnCommand Unified Manager to manage the snapshot relationships, rather than SMVI. BTW - SMVI is now VSC - Virtual Storage Console, you may want to upgrade ? Wish I could have you in class for a week to explain this all further... I hope this response has been helpful to you. Doran - You're very welcome. I understand title mix up. Tried to answer to your first post. Yes, disk sanitize would require a license. If you're no longer under support, you may still be able to get out of it. There's two options: Convince the local NetApp sales rep you'll buy some new NetApp. They could get you a temp license key. You'd need to also convince your security guys that you're buying the support and license keys for the future. Option two is to go out and buy a disk shredder. Shredded disks tell no stories. These are real cool devices. They're like paper shredders, but they chop up disk drives. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E.
