CWILEY - Ouch. Cluster Mode needs to have a dedicated aggr to host vol0 for each node. My gut response is that I'd still assign all SATA to one node and SAS to the other. I'd also go with RAID4 for the aggr0s to conserve disks on both nodes. Create another aggr on each node using the other disks. I might also break the 2 spare disks rule and have one spare on each node. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E. Mitchell - I don't know of any way to kill a 7-Mode process. There are a number of 'stop' APIs for some specific operations. The 'snapdiff' API has been a problem in the past. It takes some time to execute with high file count, given that it has to walk the file system and look at time stamps on the files. There used to be a race condition where it would chew up too many memory buffers. You can search for the BURTs using the bug report tool. We discuss these issues in our SnapProtect ILT course. I would implement snapdiff API calls with care. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E. Jamie - 7-Mode is still 7-Mode, so yes, the any NSO-154 study materials would still be very usefull for taking NSO-155. You may wish to review the certification web page at: http://www.netapp.com/us/services-support/university/certification.aspx I'd advise that you read through the Data ONTAP 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2 7-Mode Release notes. Richard - I didn't take the time to look at the definitions of the counters, but - my best edumucated guess ... The kernel internaly doesn't have measurable latency. It's handling all of the internal interupts faster than the granularity of the defined instance counters. You could look at network, disk, and protocol based latency counters ? Stefan - By default all VMs are included in defau;t sub-client. You can assign a given VM to another subclient. Then give it a different backup policy that doesn't back it up on the same schedule. Andy - Experience has taught me that when 'auto' doesn't work correctly, there's an underlying problem with the link. Have you checked the physical cabling ? Tried a different port on the switch ? I was setting up a NetApp classroom lab for the US Army on site at Fort Gordon, Georgia years ago. It's home to the US Army Signal Corps, and their IT Training school. I had a brand new FAS2040 and a Cisco 2900 switch. I couldn't get 1g working for the life of me. Tried hard configuring the link speed, bouncing both devices, with no luck. Then I remembered what I'd taught for years - check the cable. After pulling the cable off the floor I found a pretzel twist in the middle of it. I asked a soldier if they had a new Cat-5 cable. He ran down the hall and grabbed a fresh cable out of the closet, complete with the mil spec inspection sticker on the bag. Plugged the new cable in, bounced the interface, and viola ! 1Gb up and working. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E. Matsumoto - Thank you for your insight as a customer. There is a lot to said for your comments about being able to respond to change. It's one of the big advantages of using NetApp and Cluster Mode. To me, our best customer is an educated customer. It's why I spend time here on communities to answer these questions. It is also why I enjoy teaching customers, partners, and NetApp employees about performance. It isn't guess work. From using the internal Sizer tool, host tools like IOstat and SAR, and collecting data from client apps like Oracle AWR, sizing can be done accurately. There are the other factors like DR strategy, retention, replication frequency, fail over, and budget (all mentioned above) to be taken into consideration. Growth planning (mentioned above) is another concern. Given a good sales engineer and taking the time to answer all of these questions for them, NetApp can offer a solution to deliver the expected performance, without over selling the solution for the customer needs. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E. Matt - I think it can still be done, using '-snapmirror-label' on a snapshot on the source. See 'Preserving a Snapshot copy on the primary source volume' in the Data Protection Guide documentation. Example: clust1::> volume snapshot modify -volume vol1 -snapshot snapappa -snapmirror-label exp1 Remove the label after the transfer and delete the source snap on the primary. It's the mechanism for vaulting application consistent snapshot copies. I hope this response has been helpful to you. At your service, Eugene E.
