Yupp, that´s my next plan 🙂 But I read that OS X continues to support Microsoft's basic FAT32 file system and includes read-only support for Windows' default NTFS. What does it mean that NTFS is read-only?

Hi! As Apple shifts from AFP file sharing to SMB2 in OS X 10.9 Mavericks it should increase performance for NAS fileshares... right? I have a customer that uses MAC computers , and have constantly been complaining about poor performance. We have pointed to SMB1 on the MAC OS, as a Win 7 with SMB2 hade very good performance on their file server. Now, they have upgraded to OS X 10.9 Mavericks but still thinks it´s very poor compared. Any idéas how ONTAP handles then new OS X 10.9 Mavericks sessions? //H

Hi! Aprox 2 weeks ago we ugraded DFM to 5.2. With that we updated Management Console to 3.3 After that our datasets starts giving error that they are nonconformant. The error message is: The Active/Active partner of storage system controller_name does not have any interfaces in the ipspace xxxxxxx-ipspace But checking in CLI both partner nodes have interfaces connected to that ipspace. And now it gets stranger... it seems to be intermittent. Some days all datasets are conformed, some days 10 out of 20 are nonconformant. Due to this error we can´t provosion new datasets from Provisioning Manager, but from CLI there´s no problem. Also, after provisioning manually, updating the quotas file and restart the quota.. all info shows up in Provisioning Manager. Running ONTAP 7-mode 8.1.2P3 on FAS3270 active-active Any ideas?

Ok.. so you telling me if I use SecureCopy I can migrate both files, folder structure AND shares? From Windows fileserver to NetApp NAS/CIFS? No need to manually configure the shares on the NAS filer afterwards? For one customer we are talking about 10TB data and +200 shares.

Hi! We are running our controllers as hosts to different customers. We have FAS3270 active-active configuration providing NAS shares over CIFS and separate customers with vFilers. We have a large amount of windows servers (both 2003 and 2008) that hosts these files today. And we want to move them to the NAS environment in our FAS3270. So far we have handled it with Robocopy, and it has worked OK. But now, we are stuck with two different customer cases. One is a 2003 server and the other is 2008 and the problem is that robocopy is taking 20-30h to do a final sync, and the customer wont accept that timeframe. I have now tried out OSSV on the 2008 server and must say it works really good. But the last part of the migration process is still the most tricky.... moving the share structure... how do you do it? One customer have 200 shares on their windows fileserver, and doing all those manually is a pain in the b#tt. 1. what tools do you use to move data (Robocopy, OSSV etc) 2. How do you migrate the share structure? I have found a KB how to export and impport share structure, but that only applys to Windows server (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/125996) Is there a way to import the shares to our NAS environment?

Thanks Thomas! Well we do see a lot of "files locked", and I think that is due to temp files not being removed also. But From previous investigation, that also seems to be a client/OS issue, or do you know about any Netapp specific tweeks on that?

We have now found the root cause of our problems. I´ll specify them here first, and later I´ll link to all the KB´s and options I´ v found investigating this problem. So it seems we had 2 issues here, One on the client side, and one in the controller. On the client side there was an issue with desktop.ini. As soon as a user would mapp their home folder the computer started to scan the entire folder structure for desktop.ini. Of course it got access deny on everyone (except its own). It also did 4 retries to be certian of its access. This caused 20-30 MS delay and with thousands of users with desktop.ini in the folders structure we got a huge delay. There is a KB on how to fix this from MS http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549 , but our customer to another approach at this. As the desktop.ini file only function as a config file for the MS FilesSystem it´s not necessary, so the customer simply deleted all of them. Now, instead of 40-45 seconds to map a folder, it takes 0,5 seconds. The problem in the controller was due to Burt 609208 (http://support.netapp.com/NOW/cgi-bin/bol?Type=Detail&Display=609208) The value for the "cifs.tcp_window_size" option is not persistent for non-default vfilers after giveback, so even if we hade the tcp_window _size correct it set it to default 17520. This is fixed in 8.1.2P3 So other things I found to speed up the access is the following. From the client: 1.From the Start Menu , type in 'Indexing Options' in the Search Bar 2.Click 'Modify' 3.Uncheck 'Offline Files' 4.Restart the workstation (not sure if this is necessary). Also there´s a service that was running on XP, but set as Manual in Win7 called 'Web Client'. In some cases it seems like enabling that will improve the access speed.

Updated: today we did some copy tests on customers Head Office. On a regular LAN speed copy test we get Read/Write :203/111 Mbps. That´s really good and they shoudn´t experience any problems. We did this on a "vanilla" Win7 laptop with local admin account to the NetApp NAS server. Both on UNC and IP. But still, when they try to save a document, for exampel Word, excel or even a .txt file it takes 20 seconds to list all folders and another 20 seconds to save it.. Settings we have tried to change on client is: From the Start Menu , type in 'Indexing Options' in the Search Bar Click 'Modify' Uncheck 'Offline Files' Restart the workstation (not sure if this is necessary). Turning on the Web Client service (which is mentioned here ( http://goo.gl/4HPQ1) But still no luck.... both browse in explorer and "save as" seems to be slow. compared to regular filecopy

Question about vFiler considerations in this issue! We use vFilers to seperate NAS servers between different customers, and therefore each and every customer have different domain. Now I have activated quota for a customer i get reply on that the email can´t be verified.. "email domain/user can´t be verified" This customer has like 5000 users so it will be a massive work to modify each and every user like the steps above in this tread. (Still if scriptet we need someone to mach the username to the correct email) Also, is it not possible to have the email notification only show the share name? Must it show complete volume/qtree path? Thanks

I´m using an active active configuration on FAS3270 controllers, using SnapVault to a secondary site for backup. Could this affect any SnapVault relationships. I´m using a NDMP accelerator for backup up data (to a third- site 400miles apart.) I did change and set the options ndmpd.data_port_range 27000-27000 After that some of my snapvault relationships to my secondary FAS controller started failing. Using other IP adresses than the preferred interface for NDMP?? Also, is it Ok just to have one port as in my case above. Because then I set it to 27000-65535, and the first backup was OK running on port 27000. Second try failed running on port 27001, also third try on port 27002 failed. All ports between 27000-65535 is open for traffic.

Hi! Running a FAS3270 Active-Active configuration providing NAS service via vFilers to multiple customers. At the moment only CIFS is used, no NFS customers in this environment. Some of our customers experience slow performance, some don´t. I know this has been discussed several times, but this seems a little different. If we test regular file copy we get very good result. 10-11 MB/s (90-95 Mbps) which is what the customers pays for. But here´s the tricky part. When they are trying to list files and folders in Explorer, the files won´t show all at the same time but it can take several seconds for all files to list. Also saving a regular PPTX file (3 pages 1285kb) it takes several seconds for the folders to list when pressing 'Save as', then several more seconds to save it (the save bar comes up and shows a slow saving progress). Also, if they create a folder inside a current share it takes a long time for the folder to show up. Home folder is synced for offline use. After restart of PC the problems seem non-existent, after a while the problem appears again. So, could this be SMB issue? Should we disable offline files on the folder ("cifs shares -change <sharename> -no_caching")? Could disabling 8.3 filename support for the clients be helpful? Could NOT using cifs homedir make for slow connection..I mean, does the SMB list metadata for the complete searchpath? (Exampel, user trying to save file to \\filer\users$\office1\group2\user\Documents\folder, does it list from users$ or from 'users' folder?) Do you guys have any other experience where the filecopy speed is fine, but the user experience is slow??

Hi! I have a customer that uses a lot of special characters as it´s part of our language. Such as Å, Ä and Ö (Swedish language) Sometimes I get a request to check and break locks on files. to do so you would need to specify the correct path, for exampel filer> lock status -p cifs -f /vol/volname/qtree/file.xls So here´s my problem. My filer presents these characters as different characters. For exampel, if a folder is named "UMEÅ" , with an Å.. when I do ls (in priv set advanced) it presents the folder as UMEà , with this strange à character. But I can´t do ls on that folder even if I use the same format that the filer presents it with.. If I do: filer> ls /vol/volname/UMEÅ I´ll get : Can't open directory: No such file or directory Same if I do filer> ls /vol/volname/UMEà (the same way the filer presents it with ls) I still get : Can't open directory: No such file or directory On some folders there are no problem, even if it presents them with the wrong special character. But on some folders there are this problem. Is there a workaround?

Hi Martin! Yes, you are correct, it´s MS documents. I often get tickets asking to check and break locks. I user 'lock status -p cifs -f /vol/volume/qtree/etc/' But the user before could see if a colleague had it locked and ask him/her to close the documents. But as for now, they only see that a user has it locked, not which user.

Hi! I have a customer running an active-active 3170 configuration with ONTAP 8.0.2P3 7-Mode. They use it for home and common documents file server running on CIFS protocol. Since a couple of weeks back when a file is locked, the message the user gets doesn´t inform on which users has it locked. Earlier you saw the persons userID but now it just say "the file is locked by "company name" user" We haven´t changed anything on the filer. What causes the username to be listed or not in this message?

Hi This is my setup Primary controller setup with vfiler to separate different customers. ProtectionManager uses SnapVault to backup data to secondary site.. FAS3270 active/active. My problem is, when I try to do a restore from secondary on a users complete folder (using the Restore wizard) in a customer home directory, it fails with followong info: Restore skipped for path. Reason: Failed to find path in the backup image But if I do a single file or folder it works?? How come? Example using restore wizard in Management Console : Restore on /vol/vfiler_vol/home/user =fails Restore on /vol/vfiler_vol/home/user/subfolder =success

OK, so the timestamp seems to be a "feature" in my excell. If I open in a different program it says 26/11/2011 22:13 So that´s OK.. But now for the most important question. What does "Down Timestamp" mean?, Is it when the vFiler function was disabled , or when a takeover was initiated? etc? What I really want to have is a report on the time the vFiler was available for the customer..I mean if we have a SLA for 99.8% I want to show that in some way..

Hi! Looking for a report function on the vFiler level. I want to have a report every month on the uptime (or downtime) of all my vFilers. I made one in OM with the folloring two fields: * vFiler name * vFiler Down Timestamp (DD/MM/YY 24H) But I think the report seems corrupt. I´ll get the following info from the report: vFiler Name vFiler Down Timestamp (DD/MM/YY 24H) vFiler1 2026-11-11 22:13 vFiler2 2026-11-11 22:13 vFiler3 2010-02-12 16:06 vFiler4 2021-12-11 11:32 vFiler5 2020-12-11 11:09 Am I reading it wrong, but what are 2026?? It´s in the DD collumn?? And second; does this show the last time the vFiler function was down, taking in to consideration that it´s in a active-active configuration? If I do a takeover and giveback, does it affect this report? Thanks..

Hi! A question about restore GUI in NMC. I was asked by a end user to restore a couple of files from my secondary controller. Protection policy is regular SnapVault. Now here´s to the strange part. When I click through the Restore GUI there seems to be a limitation of number of files shown from the snapshot?!?!? The user was certain that the files was present at the time I was browsing, but the files didn´t show. They had A LOT of files in that folder.. aprox 450.000. I noticed that a whole batch of simular files where missing, so I mounted the snapshot instead and browsed it from my management server. Then I could find the files. So is there a limitation in the Restore GUI on how many files it can list? // Henrik
