I have hundres and hundres shares in /etc/cifsconfig_share.cfg, they all apear to be having the same SID. Do I need to know what group/user does this SID represent? or as a storage admin, all I need to do is just to create a share, as far as permission or ownership all will be left for AD admin? I have one share as following when I type cifs shares command. Does any one of fields (for instance, NetAppFileAdmin1) have anything to do with this SID? admin_accntingfile$ /vol/adminaccounting Created on 8/22/2012 abcNET\NetAppFileAdmin1 / Full Control BUILTIN\Administrators / Full Control I know my questions are never ending..

Your message made me feel better, I am not the only one for a new CIFS guy. You reminded me to check out /etc/cifsconfig_share.cfg, and there are a lot of lines with the format as following: cifs access "share_name" S-1-5-11 Change Could you please elaborate more about what S-1-5-11 is? I guess, it might be something to do with authentication group in Active Directory. Is that true? and how this S-1-5-11 is define? Since I don't have the access to AD, what am I supposed to see about this name? I know this thread has been dragged for long...

the filer has very high avg_latency, come with very high write_latency, but read_ latency is okay. It happens at about the same time everyday, and with the same patten of similar peak value and last for same length of the time, we know this is caused by the backup. However, We are wondering about why write_latency is so high, Then we checked write_data graph which doesn't so obviously matching write_latency, or happened not at the same time. 1. Does high write_latency necessarily mean that we have a lot of writes? 2. How high write_latency is related write_data counter, As we have high write_latency, if meanwhile a higher write_data counter should been seen as well?, and why? Thanks!

Hi Bill, Your message is greatly helpful. By reading your message, I am wondering what document I need to read through, in order to get understanding of these aspects of CIFS on NetApp filers, things like your said, use of /etc/cifsconfig_share.cfg, cifsconfig_setup.cfg, cifssec.cfg, /etc/registry etc... Thanks you very much for sharing!

Great, vims, Thanks a lot, we are in the same page. Just wanted to confirm, and make sure I understand you. So, will there be a short downtime when you stop SQL server, in my case, I will have to somehow stop accessing the lun?

vims, Here is my quesitons about using snapmirror. I only want to migrate some luns in a volume. As I understand, snapmirror only can copy entire volume not luns. Do you mean that I have to copy the entire volume first, then map only luns I need? Also, as I understand, I still need to resync in last step while the lun is un-accessable, so, during this short time, there would be still a short downtime, is not it? even though

while I am waiting for the process to have AD admin to type credentials, i have another question for you all. I wanted to duplicate all CIFS settings/acccess/authenticated user groups on the new filer, are there any simplifeid ways to do that?

just wanted to make sure, does "vol move" also move luns? I only wanted to move some luns within a volume, not entire volume. could you show me the syntax to use "vol move" to move luns? snapmirror will copy the entire volume not on luns level, right? If I use snapmirror, I would have to copy the whole volume first, then remove those un-needed luns at the destination? Thank you all for your messages

I have a few aggrs, one with only one volume and a number of luns is extremely over load, and the other aggrs are not so much loaded. I wanted to move some of luns from the busy aggr to the other. What is the best steps/commands to do that? Does that require luns to be disruppted? I don't have two many space left, so, don't have too much free room to play. Thanks for your advices!

Hi Bill, I followed what you said, and it went through! it is really a big through. Now, I am getting the follwoing error, I believe it is due to I don't have the priviledge on AD. What does people usually do from here? Should I ask AD admin (belong to different group) to come here, and enter the name and password on the prompt, then I can continue? or are there any other ways to do it? Password for myid@abcdomain.abc.COM: CIFS - Logged in as myid@abcdomain.abc.COM. *** The user you specified, myid@abcdomain.abc.COM, does not have *** permission to create a machine account for this server in Active *** Directory. Hi guys, I am getting another issue now. I have been prompted for root password. I have tried the root password for the filer 4 times now, and pretty sure I entered the right one. Is it possible it is not asking the root passowrd for the filers? What root password is OnTap asking, other than the filer's root password? CIFS requires local /etc/passwd and /etc/group files and default files will be created. The default passwd file contains entries for 'root', 'pcuser', and 'nobody'. Enter the password for the root user []: Password validation failed. Password has been used sometime in the last 6 change

Hi, Guys, Thank you all for your inputs. Bill, I checked the file filerB:/vol/vol0/etc/cifsconfig_setup.cfg, there is only one line in it: cifs setup -security unix -cp 437 -NTFSonly Does that mean we did not specify any IP's for WINS server? if this is the case, then I should anser "n" to the question of "Do you want to make the system visible via WINS?", and without giving it any IP's?

I honestly don't really understand what WINS servers are? Some answer "y" on the question of "Do you want to make the system visible via WINS?', then IP's.. If I answer "y", then should I use one, or two IP's in Preferred Addresses?

ipsita pattanaik, thank you! after reading your questions, I recognized that I did give names of vol/lun correct here in this post. the following is my answers: 1. on the source filer, lun name: /vol/vol1/lun1 2. I did break the volume first on dr site before created the lun, the lun name i used is the same as on the primary 3. on dr, the same name: /vol/vol1/lun1 as i learnt, i don't need to create the lun on DR site, so, now, i want to remove it, but, it won't allow me to, and getting the message: lun online: /vol/dr_vol1 : Read-only file system

to complete this entire project: Seeking for commands to create a BIG aggr(64bit), including all unused disks on the filer, without specififying any disk names? I have 4 shelves, and 23-24 disk each, the aggr will include 5RG's DP, and 3 hot spares. Also, after some tests, i would probably destroy the aggr, would this have any impact to allow me to re-create? Thank you!
