I always wondered ... As DataONTAP will stripe IO across all disks, dividing single raid group into large number of LUNs should increase disk contention in this raid group. Or do I miss something obvious?

I did perform controller replacement more than once, that is why I have reasons to state that replacement procedure is correct. If you have reasons to believe this procedure is incorrect, you need to open support case and discuss it with NetApp engineer. For the last time - you do not perform disk reassignment from maintenance mode. You halt controller after confirming systemid and reassign disks from partner node.

It apparently thinks none of PSUs are present. I'd open a case with NetApp support. Battery it complaints about is RTC coin battery, not NVRAM. I wonder if it can cause such misbehavior.

need to get into maintenance mode to reassign the disk You do NOT need to go into maintenance mode for that. What gave you that idea? Documentation quite clearly states that it is done from partner controller. I wish that netapp can produce a clear and better document There is feedback button. But I again have feeling that you did not even read documentation.

It is safe to just boot into maintenance mode to just record systemid. The prompt also says it: "It is okay to use 'show/status' sub-commands such as 'disk show or aggr status' in Maintenance mode while the partner is up." If you know new systemid already, you can simply skip it and proceed with disk reassignment.

To safer side it is better to disable the CF & do this NO! You should never do it when system is in takeover mode and of course never do it for controller replacement.

BMC is synchronized by Data ONTAP when it boots and you need to complete controller replacement and perform giveback to allow Data ONTAP to boot on replacement controller. I reviewed controller replacement instructions and personally I found them pretty much accurate. Did you try to follow them before stating that they are outdated?

Option 4 won't touch any disks that aren't already owned by the controller you are running on. That's what I thought as well. But apparently current Data ONTAP became more intelligent. Recently someone posted that when controller has no assigned disks, it will automatically assign required number of unowned disks. That's said, I always prefer to assign disks manually to be absolutely sure of the result.

IOM is SAS and it is possible to reliably track. There is no documented way to track cabling for FC shelves (and it is not clear whether such way even exists). For SAS you can track SFP serial numbers which gives you exact port-to-port connectivity.

1. Not sure what do you mean. All these features are external to storage as far as I can say. 2. Yes 3. There is at rest encryption. (information on hard disks is encrypted) 4. No in band FCP management, you need IP. It can share interfaces with NFS/iSCSI/CIFS though. 5. Not sure what do you mean. Of course you have unique serial number and some other unique identification. You also have unique SSH keys/SSL certificates. Could you give usage example?

There is no such thing as NAS or SAN volumes. It is just some presets used when volume is initially created. After creation you are free to change any parameter anyway.

Yes, you can SnapMirror to multiple destinations. We can not have too long down time on our servers, this case we better have multiple copy of the databse and log files. That is, If I have multiple copy then I can switch the luns from one place to another in minimum downtime. Can we schedule snapmirror to multiple locations ? For an example. I create another aggregate named this aggr1 on the same destination filer, then schedule snapmirror from source to detination 1 and 2. OK, I must admit I have never had any issues with it using 7-Mode. I wonder if C-Mode behaves differently here. Let’s someone who is familiar with it chime in.
