Snapmirroring 7-Mode to 7.3.6

Everyone,

The system is currently existing FAS2050/FAS2020/FAS2040 running ONTAP 7.3.6, they're using also snapmirror for DR, I now would like to purchase FAS2552 for upgrading, the 2552 will be main site and the old will be DR site.

1. In this case, can I do the FAS2552 as ONTAP 7-Mode environment to do mirror to ONTAP 7.3.6? which ONTAP version should I do?

2. Can I reuse DS14 MK2 or DS4243 shelves for FAS2552?

1. No for VSM, yes for QSM

All mirror are VSM, so any advise to make them to be QSM or any solutions let me solve this case?

In general, no (e.g. it is impossible to mirror non-qtree data into non-qtree).

The snapmirror destination must be the same or higher on the Ontap revision, unless as was stated you do Qtree snapmirror.  If the data are LUNS, its easy to move them into a qtree non disruptively so that you could use qtree snapmirror and mirror from 8.2 to a lesser Ontap.  I have done Qtree SM from 8.2 to 8.1 but not to a 7 release but I think it would work.

BTW - what is a FAS2552?

Btw please take a look my design, I will reuse FAS2050 (ONTAP 7.3.6) for backup/temporarily store, it does snapmirror (VSM/QSM) to FAS2552 (ONTAP 8.1 7-mode) and then continue to FAS2040 (ONTAP 8.1 7-mode), so is it impossible for this case?

I have also no found ONTAP 8.1.x version for FAS2552 on the support page.

1. You can perform VSM from 7G to 7-Mode. But ...

2. FAS25xx is supported starting wit 8.2.2. There cannot be any 8.1 on 25xx.

I would like to confirm things again, as Clackamas said that mirror can be done from 8.2 to 8.1, so can I apply this into my case, it means FAS2050 (ONTAP 7.3.6) --> FAS2552 (8.2 7-mode) --> FAS2040 (8.1 7-mode), pls note also that all mirrors are VSM.

Good question: I have not tried it but I think it would work. It is easy to test, create a qtree under 8.2, puts a file in it, and then try to mirror it. I do know that snapvault from 8.1 work to 7.3 systems which is very similar.

I know but don't current have an ONTAP 8.x to do this, I need to make sure that's ok which can decide to purchase FAS25xx.

You could install 8.2 simulator and test SnapMirror with 7G.
