ONTAP 9.9+ SIM CPU consumption when idle

Hi,

starting with the 9.9 simulator the CPU usage of the simulator when it is idle has somehow gotten really bad in both VMware ESXi and VMware Workstation. This happens with newly deployed VMs and upgraded VMs from older versions.

CPU usage in an idle ONTAP sim:

9.8 and older: 0-15%

9.9+: 40-60%

Anyone know why this is the case or if this could be a bug?

Hello,

I had the same behavior with an older generation cpu. In my case an Intel i7-6700K. I tested with recent generation CPUs and this behavior does not occur. So far I never found what can be generating this issue.

Hi, thanks for the reply! What platform worked for you?

I have tested it on 8th (8700k) and 11th (1135g7) gen Desktop/Notebook CPU as well as Xeon v2,v3,v4 and Xeon Gold 6150 (don't have a newer Xeon CPU unfortunately) and observe the same behaviour on all of them so I don't think it is related to CPU generation/instruction sets.

There were changes between 9.8 and 9.9 for cpu support due to BSD so I'm not surprised.
