Backup Virtual Machine (vmdk and RDM LUN FC) with Virtual Storage Console 4.0 ?

Hello,

i have four ESX 5i in a cluster. And i have two virtual machine Windows 2008 R2 SP1 cluster failover with this configuration:

I can make backup this virtual machine with Virtual Storage Console 4.0 or is not supported ?

Hard disk 1 - Virtual Disk (vmdk).

Hard disk 2 - Virtual Disk (vmdk).

Hard disk 3 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 4 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 5 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 6 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 7 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 8 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 9 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 10 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 11 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 12 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hard disk 13 - Mapped RAW LUN

Hi,

What protocol are you using: FC, iSCSI (in guest initiator, ESX stack)?

Any data in these RDMs? Normally you would use Snap Managers for specific application to handle this.

Providing, you are not using NPIV, you can use VSC backup with VMware snapshot for VSS consistency.

Any application will not be aware of backup taking place though, so you would need to manually truncate logs.

Just to be clear; VSC will not snapshot the data held in the RDM's, just the datastores containing the VMDK's only.  Snapshots of the volumes containing the RDM LUN's will need to be done separately via SnapManager/SnapDrive or similar.  Correct?

Well, not exactly.

VSC can trigger VMware snapshot on RDMs (providing they are in virtual mode), so this can give OS & VSS consistency for certain aps.

That said, my preferred (& generally recommended) way is to use VSC just for backing up OS partitions, & then using relevant SnapManagers for backing up of respective application data LUNs.
