I've installed VSC 5.0x6 on a Windows 2012 server, but am having strange errors trying to start the service. ID 7024 Incorrect Function. Unable to open up the Plugin registration webpage either.
Does VSC 5.0 work on 2012 R2? Or is my issue related to something else?

I installed it on 2012 R2 datacenter, and apart from the annoying bug where you have to run vsc ssl setup manually, it appears to be working correctly.

Hey rubinsed1,
VSC 5.0 isn't supported on Windows 2012 at the moment, this should work fine on 2008 however.

can you provide more detail please? I assume you mean it moans about the service and then you cannot get to the register web page. running vsc ssl setup via the command line and enter 2 passwords allows the web registeration page to work and continue
I am also trying on 2012 R2 as our vcenter is on this OS

Ditto. I have the same event log ID 7024 incorrect function error. Attempts to start the VSC service appear to succeed, but the process stops after a few seconds.
